Mike McCarthy on Jason Witten coaching: Conversation for the future

Before the Cowboys played their final game of the 2019 season, tight end Jason Witten said he will make a “pretty quick” decision about whether or not he will play in 2020.

Witten did not play in 2018 while serving as a commentator on Monday Night Football, but said that his new post-playing aspiration is to coach in the NFL. On Thursday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about that possibility.

Parcells didn't want veteran hold over from the dynasty teams, maybe McCarthy feels the same way about some older veterans? We'll see I guess.

I would take Witten back as a backup TE and short yardage specialist, but has to be made clear what his role is.

why?

He outplayed every TE on the roster.

not even close.

The nepotism stops now that a real HC is in charge. Now it's about winning a Championship!

Now let's get down to Wittens not coming back

People keep talking about moving on like we have a stable of great TEs available.

Truth is, despite all the hate he gets here, Witten doesnt need athleticism to find soft spots in short yardage zones. He can also still block.

Witten at his age is better than a whole lot of TE2s and TE3s in the league.

Y'all should play more sports, old man game is a thing and you dont underestimate it.

We need a young guy... a solid rookie plus Jarwin plus Witten isnt bad at all.
Thank you!!!! Some fans have no idea, they just talk outta their butts. I do too, but not on this one. Witten is still serviceable and cheap. We could do a lot worse. If he moves on, fine, but if he and MM can work together on the field or as a coach? I'd love to have him around. Leaders like that don't grow on trees.

Yep, while not stellar, still trying to figure out why 8.4 yards per catch is a bad thing. It is not with the top TE's for sure but if I want to move the chains, 8.4 yards, even if you think it should be 10-11 is not a bad thing.

He also had a heck of a lot more snaps. And it wasn’t even close
True, but that's on the coaches or the lack of confidence they had in Jarwin. Not Wittens fault he was overplayed. If you say he forced himself in, then again, thats on the coaches. They are gone.

Its more about the threat that Witten can no longer provide he scares no one and shrinks the field. His time is past and he needs to be a back up

I agree and the coaches are now gone. So if they have no faith in Jarwin which I'm not sure one way or the other then get a replacement in here but its clear Witten is done and has been now for 3 years

I agree. A backup role at about 15-20 snaps would be great, but we need a quality starter.

1000%.......god knows this team needs a few. With the exception of Dak, the so-called captains were a big-time embarrassment.

I have a feeling Mike has told him this only he makes the team. Remember at the end of the season, he made it very clear he wanted to continue playing.

When exactly was Witten a threat?

That is not what his career has been about. He has been a chains mover, always. We have Cobb, Gallup and Cooper for big plays, we don't necessarily need a big play TE, we need a good checkdown option for Dak. Someone who can be relied on to have a bit of space when nothing else is open. His yards per target is 6.4.

My guess, Mike has assured him a spot on the team but only as a backup. Otherwise, he'll likely end up somewhere on the coaching staff. Like I said in another thread, the team was screaming for lockerroom leadership.
I think you are right on track
He’s one of the all time greats so I think MM respects that and his leadership
But he sees it time to hang it up and is letting witten do so with options and dignity
No HC would just come in and cut him
