Your expectations are to fixated and directed at certain aspects. The dynamics of football changes every week with a team as talented as we are. Teams try different things each week and doing so opens certain players. The importance is when that happens that player steps up. This team has way to much talent to house really good individual stats. This will be a TEAM spreading it out all over on Offense and Defense. They are rotating constantly trying to keep guys fresh and prevent the injuries that come with being tired.
Look to the team stats for a better idea of what is truly happening. For example look how well our team is doing with sacks as a whole instead of just Ware.
If Witten seems to have less production, I'm actually happy about that in light of the fact that the other offensive players are getting their touches and producing with them.
Much of Witten's decrease would be attributable to the 2-TE offense being run where the blocking is being emphasised meaning Witten is not going out so as to protect Bledsoe..
..and the running game is beginning to jell with the offensive line and certainly Witten and Fascano being asked to seal off backside pursuit or open holes at the point of attack.
The more running carries we have, the less Witten and the TE's need to contribute in the passing game to move the chains.
And lastly, it's pretty obvious, with TO and TG and Crayton out of the slot, the WR's are getting cushions and can easily pickup the 5-7 yard passes and turn them into 20 yard catches.
I think that one thing that needs to change is using TO on all these quick slants. He's getting so much attention with at least two guys hitting him every pass close to the LOS..he's going to definately take a beating over the course of the season and probably get a more serious injury.
Every team is going to be trying to take their shots at him to try to take him out of the game.
I'd start putting him in the slot and try to motion him more to get him free of the tight coverages and make the defense react to his movement. Sitting him out wide plays into the hands of the defense and what they want to do to isolate him and take him out of the offense.
This is where Witten will probably flourish or Fascano. If TO goes in motion and the defense moves with him, then throwing back to the opposite side where the TE will get single coverage sounds like the way to attack to me.
Or running the ball opposite to TO's motion seems likely as LBer's and Safeties will be adjusting to this motion and leave favorable blocking matchups for the TE's and OL.
Witten has his time coming. There are going to be games, against better teams, that will take TO out of the game and/or put pressure on the OL and Bledsoe with pass rush pressure.
That's when the TE's will answer the bell.
Like this Sunday against the Eagles.
No doubt, playing in Philly, the gameplan will be conservative, smash-mouth and lot's of short passes to keep the ball from McNabb.
Can we say Witten for a first down.?
Witten for the score..?
