Two weeks in a row we left a gunner uncovered

Nah not really, they never stopped us. We moved the ball and scored at will.

Yeah, without those drops the drives extend and Dallas don't have the ball, also one was nearly a Romo int. I counted six nieve to think that doesn't change the game.

A. It was a designed play by Dallas because both gunners moved inside right before the snap, obviously trying to either get a block or force the punter to rush and get off a bad punt.

B. The Colts had a "standing audible" all season that if they got an uncovered gunner the punter was to throw the ball to him and this was the first opportunity they had to use it in an actual game.

Seemed like a dumb play by both teams. Dallas showed the block way too soon and allowed the punter time to audible, you have to jump inside right at the last second before the ball is snapped to get more rushing than blocking. Dumb move on the part of Indy for going for the fake from your own 19, in the first quarter, only down 1 TD. Even though they got the look they wanted, you have to think about something going wrong. What if the punter throws a bad ball? What if the gunner drops it? What if the ball is intercepted? If something goes wrong you hand the other team the ball at the 19 yard line already down 1 TD............at best you are now down 10, probably down 14 if you are playing a good offense.

I don't think either team is going to try this again in the playoffs...........Colts see what happens if you don't convert and Dallas sees that they almost gave up a TD if the gunner catches that in stride.

Pat McAfee said in the post game presser that it's a play they have installed and run automatically if they ever get that look. So they got it and ran it. They've had it installed all season, waiting for a chance to run it.

well that's sort of what I mean, I think it was a response to our mistake

I'm reasonably certain they didn't call anything, we just left a receiver wide open and it's the punter's prerogative to throw that ball.

Exactly...the punt team protector actually makes the call. You can see him do it on the replay.

They may have been trying to block the punt, but I am pretty sure leaving that guy un blocked was not intentional

It wasn't against the Eagles since Harris had to run up and cover him.

The Eagles game looked liked we only had 10 guys on the field.

Not sure what they were doing yesterday.

Possibly worse than any Garrett call, it was beyond stupid. Now, maybe it was a quick decision based on the lack of coverage but still dumb.

I don't see how it was dumb.

The receiver was WIDE open for a BIG gain. Had he not dropped the ball, Pagano looks like a genius. And it wasn't a difficult throw and catch at all (I also believe McAfee was a high school QB). The receiver just dropped a pass that he should have caught with ease.

They might be trying to duplicate what happened to us. I think it was the Cards game where a guy left the gunner uncovered and blocked our punt. His timing was much better than our's was though. Regardless, I don't want to see it again.

It looked like Dallas was trying to bait the fake, but the cover man couldn't get back in time to defend.

I really think this is the case...and I think part of it was the fact that they were so far backed up into their territory. I know the guy was wide open and the punter threw a good pass, but you know what, there is a pretty good reason that guy is a gunner and not a receiver. He looked like he couldn't catch a cold.

Thank god the Colts couldn't catch a cold tonight.....

Yep, total luck. But I'd like to think it wouldn't have mattered in the long run the way the Cowboys were playing. That was as spirited an effort that I've seen from this team in a really long time. All four quarters.

Scandrick was just a little late getting into position. He waited a bit longer than he should have...he was trying to effect the blocking scheme to help with the punt block attempt.

Stupid call by the Colts to try that in those circumstances.

Way to deep in their territory, especially that early in the game. Just a risky move at that point IMO.

It was intentional. They were trying to block the punt.

Intentionally stupid then. Most teams have an audible in that if a gunner is left uncovered, and they see it, they can audible into a pass play.

There had to be a screw up by someone.

They didn't mention it on the broadcast, but the "receiver" was a DB.

Early in the game is when to do it. And the reward was there (a big gain instead of a 1st down). And the guy was wide open and it hit him dead in the hands. To me, it was the perfect time to do it considering it was early in the game and it completely caught the Dallas ST off guard. Just a matter of a lack of execution.

Dude, I'm with you. Outside of Bailey, special teams play has been less than impressive to me this season. Dallas potentially dodged a bullet yesterday with that play.

I could not see what Harris was doing on that play. The last time they left the gunner uncovered, Harris came up to cover him.

The Colts almost had to attempt the pass; otherwise, the Cowboys likely block the punt.

It was obvious that the Colts called an audible to pass at which point it seems like the Cowboys should have gotten back out to cover the gunner.

It's clear that it was done on purpose this time. Patmon comes off the gunner to get a free run at the punter. Scandrick breaks from the middle of the defense to cover the gunner.

It seems we were gambling that the Colts would either punt it anyway or Scandrick could get there in coverage because most punters aren't going to throw a perfect pass. Either way, I don't like the gamble. We baited them into faking but were lucky the ball was dropped.
