My question is how has he gone this far with THAT bad of technique? And we aren’t talking about subtle nuance what maybe a lower level coach at Tulsa might not pick up…we are talking about the literal fundamentals of playing offensive line. The power and pancakes look cool and all, but Smith has flashes of some of the worst tape you will ever see from a 1st round pick

    My scout report?

The ONE thing the Cowboys could NOT do is take a player in the first round with ANY major issues. And who do they get?

A COLLEGE player (far less games than the NFL in a season and lesser competition) who had SIXTEEN penalties in one season. And per the NFL scout report he also has other problems:
    • Overall play is raw and undisciplined.
    • Pass protection technique needs overhaul.
    • Fails to maintain a grounded, balanced base.
    • Hands swing way out wide and rarely catch rusher's frame
    • Fails to finish his block at times.
    • Doesn't play with consistent body control as run blocker.
    • Allows defender to cross his face and penetrate the gap.
My frustration level with Jerry is off the charts.

As always, I will give the kid every chance, not his fault the Cowboys completely screwed up the no. 24 pick. And it's not unheard of for players with issues to turn out great, and certainly no draftee is perfect.

But at this point I'm giving this draft pick grade a F....

On The Athletics feed, Dane looked shocked at the pick. I would read it, yea Dallas liked him....but enough to take him at 24 with the board that was available.

I don't hate the pick. I want trenches with most of our picks unless someone just falls in your lap. I really didn't want a WR in the first round. A better OL is going to make every skill position more effective. The truth is that picking at 24 is going to bring in a guy with some flaws.

If the Cowboys love this guy, they needed to take him. I don't believe he lasts until their pick in the second.

Patriots took Cole Strange. I like Strange but Smith is a better prospect.

I would of rather move back a few spots to take him, but the Titans love him and had to hand in the card at 24.

Cowboys lost Collins and Williams. Biadasz hasn't done that well. Smith is near the end of his career. And they take a player who needs tons of development.
A team with a solid o-line can take this guy.
    Dallas cannot.

But they did. Why am I not surprised?

Smith just beat people up with zero technique. We have seen other Tackles drafted for traits in the past. If the scouts determined that he is coachable and willing to put in the work, it's a ball of clay to mold.

He held people. This narrative that his penalties were because he’s too strong or some non-sense is completely false. He grabs and holds

My scouting report is that there is NO WAY this guy was the top guy on our board at 24.

Kenyon Green had similar concerns as a pass protector, but both players are excellent run blockers. Putting him inside, will mitigate some of his concerns as he develops technique.

He has to learn technique, leverage and the ability to use his frame properly. I think is can coach him up to become more dispilined, but he has an NFL ready frame now.

But how long will that take (under Philbin's expert tutelage), taking into account he's got to learn (albeit lesser) technical position?

im optimistic about this kid. Sucks that hes not going to be a day 1 starter, but with Tyron and Martin as mentors, he could become the mauling LG we have missed since Leary

We have seen evidence with the development of Steele, who doesn't possess anywhere close the physical traits that Smith has.

I don't get it. NFL.com had Smith ranked just below Zion Johnson (6.34, 6.33). Both had plus starter grades.

Yep by moving him next to the ALL Pro,HoF RG.

Cant deny that for whatever reason that O-Line crumbled from Week 9 or are we putting the whole issue on Connor Williams.

A good coach will overcome the issues he faces.....to me Philbin just relied on hope. Assuming the mornings rumors of us taking Smith were leaked by the team it appears Philbin has got the piece he wanted/needed.

BTW - I am happy we signed interior O-Linesman, just not him at 24. I'll bite on it, but this is Philbin's last chance saloon.

    Would be interesting whether:

    1) we had Zion/Kenyon ahead of him, but we realised they were going to go before we picked
    2) Whether we see Smith as an eventual LT, or as a Guard....I suppose we 'expect' him to hit his Guard (floor) with a 'hope' he can hit his ceiling

Where do you see that? The Athletic gave 1st Round grades - Cowboys C+. Pats D

This kid was drafted to be their starting LG. Daniel Jeremiah’s take on the player is that he has the tools to be an incredible Guard. No need to look at this kid as a Tackle. Sliding him inside gives him the best chance. They’ve done all the work on the player. The pick was not at all a surprise.
