Tyrann Mathieu: After 10 failed tests, I lost count

I'd be willing to overlook one failed drug test. It's college and kids are going to experiment with pot. A second failed test is a concern and I'd drop a kid a round because of it. A third failed test is a big red flag and I may gamble a late round pick, but only if the kid is an exceptional talent. Anything more than that and I don't touch the kid, not even as a udfa.

I realized that he failed multiple tests, but 10+?!?!?!?!

I'd be okay with Mathieu in the 2nd round but I doubt he falls to our pick. He should have a good career as a CB/safety/return guy. He has rare ball skills for a DB and is an incredible bltizer from the slot CB. With the move to more and more 3WR sets as the base offense and more wide open play you need guys like him more and more. If he has a good interview and has a strong history of multiple passed MJ tests then I'd be okay with him n the second because I'd like to release OScan and that bad contract of his and upgrade the position. I also think Mathieu could move to Safety and play there as well because he is very thick and can play CF very well.

In the 2nd? Really? That surprises me. I hear everything you say about his play on the field, and I agree with it. I wouldn't touch a guy with his substance abuse problems at all, unless it's in UDFA. Mathieu, in particular, I don't trust has changed sufficiently, at all. There are too many good players in this draft to take that kind of chance on a guy with his question marks that early.

Even if he weren't off the board altogether, I wouldn't look at him before the third, and would be more comfortable with him in the 4th based on talent, alone. Shorter DBs who lack elite speed get eaten alive in the NFL. He does have elite college ball skills, but that's not a given to translate to a league where the players he's covering are so much bigger and so much faster.

opposite of RKG...if Garrett is truly having a hand in building the team, which it appears to be so, this guy's name isn't even on our board, regardless of talent

He will go in the 3rd-4th most likely a comp pick at the end of the 3rd.

"If he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help," the coach told USA Today on the condition of anonymity.

Interesting quote.

Really????

He didn't fail one or two tests, he failed them in double digits. Someone will draft him, but I can't see anyone spending a pick before the 4th. That and I'm not totally convinced his game will translate in the nfl.

Big deal. If they tested NBA players there wouldn't be an NBA.

It depends on the interview. I saw a short bit with him where he talked about how he got caught up in all the hype of "honey badger" and got tempted into self-destructive behaviours. He accepted that he had a problem and sought out help to change his life around and give up substance abuse. If the team believes in him he has rare ball skills and that is what is needed on defense these days. If you're not taking the ball away you're usually going to be losing games.

Do you remember the second half of the 2010 season with Romo out? We had a porous defense that gave up lots of yards and quite a few points. The reason we won so many games isn't because the offense was a juggernaut. The difference was that under Coach P we were forcing 2-3 turnovers per game.

Well Tryann is a TO-generating machine. He is that anti-Oscan. It would be incredibly advantageous to have a guy like that with his tackling and blitzing skills who we could lineup in the slot. He can play the run, he can defend the pass, he can play CF and he can blitz. While carrying out all his duties he has that knack for creating turnovers.

I agree it is a gamble but guys with his ability don't go in the second round. They usually go in the mid-first.

So a lot depends on the interview and background check to see how truly committed he seems to be to maintaining his abstinence and focusing on a football career.

I don't usually like knuckleheads but he is one who might be worth gambling upon.

It'll be interesting to see who is willing to give the kid a chance. I doubt he is still available by the end of the second round after his workouts but I could be wrong. Teams may assume the worst but given that someone gave Janoris Jenkins a 2nd round chance last year, I think someone will give Tyrann a chance, too.

Well then, we all knew he failed several tests and was suspended. I never imagined it was THAT many. Goodness. What round do you think he lands in now?(I have no desire to get him, I know some may)

ANd people were comparing this guy to Rambo (who failed 2).

You fail 10 tests and it's not just a "Immaturity thing", it's a bonafide addiction.

This astounds me on so many levels.

Aside from that. What does this tell us about LSU?

Second round???

That's not too smart IMO.
