In the 2nd? Really? That surprises me. I hear everything you say about his play on the field, and I agree with it. I wouldn't touch a guy with his substance abuse problems at all, unless it's in UDFA. Mathieu, in particular, I don't trust has changed sufficiently, at all. There are too many good players in this draft to take that kind of chance on a guy with his question marks that early.
Even if he weren't off the board altogether, I wouldn't look at him before the third, and would be more comfortable with him in the 4th based on talent, alone. Shorter DBs who lack elite speed get eaten alive in the NFL. He does have elite college ball skills, but that's not a given to translate to a league where the players he's covering are so much bigger and so much faster.
It depends on the interview. I saw a short bit with him where he talked about how he got caught up in all the hype of "honey badger" and got tempted into self-destructive behaviours. He accepted that he had a problem and sought out help to change his life around and give up substance abuse. If the team believes in him he has rare ball skills and that is what is needed on defense these days. If you're not taking the ball away you're usually going to be losing games.
Do you remember the second half of the 2010 season with Romo out? We had a porous defense that gave up lots of yards and quite a few points. The reason we won so many games isn't because the offense was a juggernaut. The difference was that under Coach P we were forcing 2-3 turnovers per game.
Well Tryann is a TO-generating machine. He is that anti-Oscan. It would be incredibly advantageous to have a guy like that with his tackling and blitzing skills who we could lineup in the slot. He can play the run, he can defend the pass, he can play CF and he can blitz. While carrying out all his duties he has that knack for creating turnovers.
I agree it is a gamble but guys with his ability don't go in the second round. They usually go in the mid-first.
So a lot depends on the interview and background check to see how truly committed he seems to be to maintaining his abstinence and focusing on a football career.
I don't usually like knuckleheads but he is one who might be worth gambling upon.
It'll be interesting to see who is willing to give the kid a chance. I doubt he is still available by the end of the second round after his workouts but I could be wrong. Teams may assume the worst but given that someone gave Janoris Jenkins a 2nd round chance last year, I think someone will give Tyrann a chance, too.
