OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM TYRON SMITH: Late last week, the Cowboys approached me with a deal I told my agents I wanted to sign. My agents explained the pros and cons of this deal versus one that may be shorter term and/or higher guarantee. After careful consideration, I decided this long term deal was exactly what I wanted. Over the past three years, the Cowboys organization and Jones Family have helped me through trying times and I felt this was my opportunity to return the gratitude. I am beyond grateful for the Cowboys staff, my teammates, and the fans, and wanted to ensure I was locked in as a "Cowboy for Life". I want to thank everyone for their support and look forward to having a star on my helmet for the remainder of my career.

Damn happy for this kid. We needed a feel good story and this fits the bill. That last line really seals it for me.

Sounds good to me!

:D

Frank Gore didn't get much more than that. I wouldn't even be that mad with giving him the same contract as Gore, which was 4/$25.9M with $13M guaranteed.

Approximately $6.5M/year AAV, but with the increase in cap you can front load the deal to take the brunt of the hit in the 2015 season. Have his cap number go $10M/$8M/$4M/$4M

Cap hit and dead money is only between $4M to likely $6.5M if you cut him a year early, and a 4 year extension puts his free agency year at age 30-31. If he's the next AP, give him another 4 year deal. If not, we've given ourselves 4 years to groom or find a replacement, and if we still haven't found that, we just go running back high in the draft the following year.

Pretty safe to buy this guy's jersey since he'll be around until he's 34.

I agree fully.

I keep asking people, when was the last time a SB winner had a top ranked WR? Not very often--especially in the last 15-20 years.
People keep saying this. And keep forgetting the Broncos had d.thomas. Seattle had just traded a kings ransom. Ravens had Anquan going nuts. Cards made the dance with Fitz. Pats haven't been back without Moss. Saints had a very good Colson.

I could go on.

You need to be able to pass in this league to be successful. As a generalization. Easiest way to do that is to have elite wr play.

For some reason I can't get into this section of the site on my mobile, but...

Yay.

Also, reward for breaking the guy expected to be the team's #1 edge rusher?

Just got home from my first training camp visit this year and wow is Tyron Smith looking beastly. The guy was manhandling defensive linemen during drills today and during the scrimmage. He's improved even from last season and is a monster.

Definitely need good ones...several if possible.

What I said was still true.
When was the SB winner that had top ranked 5 WR? None of those example fit both categories. Guess that is kind of splitting hairs though.

But I get your point. High end ones are very valuable. It's just that when people start talking Calvin money, I see massive cap hit somewhere I'd prefer not to have it.

We've been making a lot more sensible deals as of the past few years.

You'd probably have to go back to the 2006 Colts when they had Marvin Harrison. Before that, the Rams with Bruce, Holt..

The Giants won 2 with guys like Burress, Manningham, Nicks, etc. Not that those guys were bad players, but they weren't superstars either.

I'm very happy about this contract. I'm even happier to hear that it was Tyron receiving it and not Dez. I like Dez a lot as a player, but there's no way I value him over having a franchise LT for the next 10 years. I'd rather have 2-3 good receivers than using that cap money locking up 1 great one.

I'm sure that the Cowboys are additionally wanting a little more of an indicator, which gave the contract status to Frank Gore.

DeMarco Murray might project similarly, but for management purposes, the franchise is taking a look and see stance, my guess now, to maintain a buffer cap space for another negotiation that is on the board - with Dez Bryant.

That, and a possible need to the additions of possibly two to three veterans as things develop around the offensive line and defensive line status through camp.

This pretty well demonstrates the relationship that Dallas now possesses, in relation to the rest of the NFL and a strong NFC East mark on position as well:

Big-money position
The Cowboys made Tyron Smith the highest-paid left tackle in the NFL. Smith’s eight-year extension will average $12.2 million per season. The six left tackles who have contracts that will average at least $10 million per season:

I'd love to show my appreciation for someone's kindness to me by accepting 100 million dollars of their money.

Great signing here. The length of this contract benefits the Cowboys big time, and they tie up a core player who is one of the top players at his position at what should be reasonable money as the next TV contracts kick in. Nice job by the Joneses here.

He'll be the best LT in the game in two years. Great signing. I hope the curse of Jerry doesn't hang it's head over this one.
