FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is not overly critical of his players publicly, so when he chides one even a little bit it is noteworthy.

On Monday, Garrett was not pleased with the work of defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford.

"I thought he was tough sitting in against the run at times. I thought he affected the quarterback at times," Garrett said. "But he needs to be a more productive player for us. We need to get more out of our defensive line as we go forward."

Crawford was credited with two tackles by the coaches in the Cowboys' season-opening loss to the New York Giants. He did not have a quarterback pressure or a sack. He did draw a holding penalty.

Crawford did not disagree with Garrett's assessment.

"I played horrible," Crawford said. "I definitely didn't play like I wanted to play."

They simply jumped the gun on his extension. He had a decent 2014, but they were acting like he blew up and made All Pro or something.

That just points out an inability to self-evaluate. And also a lack of nerve to deal with someone walks in free agency. It is what we do, clutch onto them for dear life once even modest production shows itself.

More than one player has done this after getting their scholarship.

I never understood he hurry to give that contract. I never saw "it" in the guy.

Didn't they rush to pay Jay Ratliff as well? They gave him a massive contract extension way ahead of when they actually needed to?

Average player getting paid like a superstar. We have a few of those unfortunately.

Yep, we have guys that couldn't even start for other teams, I know that, you know that and most fans know that. I cant believe the staff thinks otherwise.

Miles Austin was sort of similar, but he did have a truly monster season. I don't know what on earth they saw out of Crawford's 2014 that impressed them that much.

Miles would tantalize with the big play occasionally. Of course he was nicked up too much. This guy only seems to have one one of these two things, and it isnt the good one.

A lot of it was his intangibles off the field. I've noticed if you keep your head down, don't cause any distractions and put your work in the weight room/film room then you have a very good chance of getting extended under Garrett regardless of your production (Crawford, Wilber, Hanna). These are the type of guys great franchises wouldn't hesitate to replace w/ late round picks.

I'm not sure why your attacking Hanna on this one. Guy has been nothing but a solid player for us up to this point. I'm a little perplexed with how Crawford has been playing. I really liked the guy before he got his big pay day. He never struck me as a guy who would just coast after getting paid, but hey money changes people.

Has Crawford had a standout game since the contract extension? Just curious here....
