I think you saw it through silver and blue goggles, as is your right as a fan. I didn't see anything malicious. I saw a guy who didn't want to get steamrolled but knew he had to try to break up the play.

Again, I could be wrong. Like everyone on here I watch a lot of NFL football and I don't recall seeing a CB dive at the knees of an OT like that very often. I didn't even say I blame him or it was overly dirty, I just don't recall seeing other CBs dive straight at the knees like that.

I understand people saying this was a dirty hit, but its not uncommon for DBs to take out blockers this way. Ive seen this before

It was dirty but it was more of a defense mechanism to not get killed. If he went head up with Tyron there wouldnt be much left of him.
He saw that same video of Tyron eating corners that everyone else saw and decided he didn't want to be on a milk carton.

He was not doing anything to break up the play and if he wanted to avoid being steamrolled, he could have just gone to the ground. Instead he slammed into Tyron's legs with maximum force and in no way help his defense get to the ball carrier.

Usually they go lower and just trip up the OLineman or force him to go around them. This guy slammed directly into Tyron's legs.

Maybe I saw it wrong, but Idk how you do one without doing the other. A DB vs Tyron, he has no choice...I dont want it to happen, Tyron is a legend, sucks, but its not as uncommon as were making it. IMO

No, it was not the normal way that DBs avoid being pummeled by OLinemen in that situation. This DB didn't avoid contact, he initialed contact with Tyron's legs. He hit him right above the knee. Most DBs just dive down near the ankles on those plays which is less contact for both the DB and the OLineman.

That happens on a regular basis when a 320lb tackle is about to kill a 190lb corner back.

I'm just glad Tyron was wearing a brace..Might have been just enough protection to mean the difference between a "sprain" versus "tear".

Idk dude. I dont think we can justifiably say this DB tried to hurt Tyron. We see this so many times on screens etc. No DB is going to just dive at his ankles and do nothing or stand a OLmen up. Theres a reason why there was no flag or fine after the game. Not even a mention of it. It was just extremely unfortunate that Tyron leg was injured weeks prior as it were.

Whatever the intent, it was a dumb play. He put himself and Tyron at risk of injury and there was zero to gain from it.

It is not the normal way that DBs handle that situation.

On a sweep, if you are the Corner, your job is to set the edge and turn the run back in. To be honest, all the CB could really do is try and take Tyron out at the knees. If Tyron gets his hands on you, then Zeke has the corner and the sideline for a few yards or more.

I've never seen a play quite like that one.

He went right at Tyron's legs. Normally a player in that position will try to get inside or outside of the block and attempt to impede the runner, but this player just went straight for Tyron's knees.

The runner is just going to cut inside or outside of that block regardless of whether there is a "pile up" because it would only be a 2 man pile-up. If the defender takes himself out of the play there is no benefit to the defense.

I've seen the same type of play plenty of times (as have others). A DB simply cannot take on a offensive lineman. And the speed of the play doesn't allow for him to try to slip the block and potentially miss the tackle and allow not only the RB to get by, but also continue to have a lineman out in front of him. His job is to take out the lineman. And how do you take out a giant? Take his legs out from under him (unless you're Mo Claiborne and mysteriously fall down flailing). I didn't think it was dirty and still don't.

The saving grace I haven't seen mentioned is the fact Tyron had a brace already on his right knee. I'm guessing that helped in preventing further injury.

It's what you are taught to do. When you are a buck 80 and have a 300lb guy coming at you, you take him on by going low and turn the play inside. Wasn't dirty. Just a football play

Thanks for all the great replies and analysis. Seems like maybe a 50/50 split between those who found it unnecessary and those who found it normal.
