totally agree with that, i think thats why the cowboys did what they did with mainly taking special teams players. Because not sure if your aware of this or not, but there was talk about some of the players on special teams didnt want to play on special teams. And ex special teams coach had to lilke beg players to play on special teams.

Bingo.

I'm glad you raised that point. Special teams isn't an after-thought. It is an important phase of the game. And you need guys who love and thrive on special teams.

What's it going to be then, eh?

now you guys are preaching....now you guys are getting it. we had WAY TO MANY HIGH DRAFT PICKS WE WERE COUTING ON FOR SPECIAL TEAMS...these guys KNOW they will not be cut because of their draft status

Special teams guys have to play from WEEK TO WEEK as if their lives depended on it. But when the Anthony Spencers and Bobby Carpenters and Kevin Burnetts...all guys that were 1st and 2nd round picks...when these are the guys you are EXPECTING to do the dirty work....you are not where you need to be in terms of how your roster is built.

Special teams players need to truly love to play and appreciate what they do. It takes a special breed. It certainly isn't going to be for everyone, least of all for those who feel entitled or simply just play there because they can't do anything else. Octavien was a nice pickup there last year and it was clear that by the end of the year, he was one of our better ones as he left players like Carpenter and Rogers in the dust. Polk was as well, but he's older and probably won't be back.

It also did not help that Hard Knocks left EVERYONE on the team thinking their were rock stars....so special teams work was beneath some of these guys. But we are getting them out of here now.

Sounds like you are speaking about little Bobby Carpenter. His career at ESPN is beckoning.

Kiper list him as a 6-6 260 TE. He is also suppose to be a LS. Its certainly possible they could bulk him up and try C though. Thats what Brian Watters did coming out of North Texas but moved to guard.

here is alittle more on him;
Hunt (6-7, 260) caught 31 passes for 367 yards and two TDs as a senior. He turned 26 years old in December.

We signed another QB, Carpenter of Ariz State, per dallascowboys.com blog, Josh Ellis ... here it is:

---

After hauling in 12 rookies in this weekend's NFL draft, the Cowboys weren't done, working well into the night to add undrafted free agents.

As of Monday morning, five are expected to sign with the team, and three-to-four more should be on the way. The biggest name is that Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter, a four-year starter for the Sun Devils.

Carpenter threw for 81 touchdowns and 10,491 yards in college. He had long been thought of as a draftable prospect, but had arguably his worst season as a senior, passing for just 16 touchdowns to go with 2,493 yards. Carpenter is 6-3, 225, the same size as the Cowboys' fourth-round pick, Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee. The Cowboys typically carry four quarterbacks through training camp in order to keep everyone's arm fresh.

The Cowboys are also close to agreements with BYU offensive lineman Travis Bright, Virginia wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, Boise State wide receiver Julian Hawkins and Texas-El Paso tight end Jamar Hunt.

After missing his sophomore season with a knee injury, Ogletree returned in 2008 to catch 58 passes for 753 yards and five scores. The 6-1, 196-pounder was a freshman for the Cavaliers when Cowboys tight ends coach John Garrett coached there. The Cowboys drafted on UVA player, sixth-round tight end John Phillips.

The 6-5, 316-pound Bright, who broke his leg in the 2007 Las Vegas Bowl, was a team captain for the Cougars. Hawkins has nice size at 6-3, 223 pounds, and is a converted tight end. The 25-year-old Hunt has prototypical size, himself. He's 6-7, 260 pounds, and likely competes with Phillips and Rodney Hannah to be the team's third tight end.

The Cowboys won't release the full list of undrafted free agents until Thursday.

Rudy Rudy Rudy Rudy

From what I saw of him he's a tough dude. All the highlights I saw he was getting hammered.

Not a single player on that list I want to keep.

Actually, Matt Spanos might be a viable prospect to back up Gurode at center... and Octavien is apparently one of the most improved players at the OTAs, so I'm keeping an eye on him, too...

TRAVIS BRIGHT MEASURABLES
Height: 6-4 Weight: 317
40-yard dash: 5.39 10-yard dash: 1.81
20-yard shuttle: 4.56 60-yard shuttle:
Broad jump: 9-0 225-lb. bench: 35
3-cone drill: 7.76 Vertical jump: 35
Wonderlic: 20-yard dash: 3.09

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is strong, especially at the point of attack. Uses his hands well and plays under control. Displays impressive technique, works to make all his blocks and is a good finisher. Is quick off the ball and has a strong, effective punch. Plays under his pads well in the run game. Is a powerful run blocker who can move the pile. Uses his size and bulk to lean on the defender and wear him out.

Weaknesses: Has below-average lateral quickness. Must improve his hip and knee flexibility. Plays high at times. Is not a natural athlete. Lacks the speed or quickness to make blocks in space. Can be beaten by faster defenders in the pass blocking area.

Bottom line: Bright is a solid football player who understands how to play the game. He is best as a run blocker, but needs some work on pass blocking. Still, there's little doubt he'll be playing on Sundays next season as a starter.

YES!!! I had him going to us in my mocks. I like this player, should be able to unseat a current back-up.

Here Come the Undrafted Rookies

Having selected 12 players in the draft there wasn't going to be a huge need to load up on undrafted rookie free agents.
These lists usually bore people, but there are finds to be had after the draft. Remember - Tony Romo and Miles Austin were both undrafted as was Sam Hurd.
Right now, here are the rookies expected to sign with the Cowboys soon:

Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State
Michael Turkovich, OT, Notre Dame
Asaph Schwapp, FB, Notre Dame
Greg Isdaner, OG, West Virginia
Travis Bright, OL, BYU
Kevin Ogletree, WR, Virginia
Julian Hawkins, WR, Boise State
Jamar Hunt, TE, UTEP

The Cowboys may sign one additional rookie free agent, but this is probably the complete list.

Wow, no DL at all in the Draft or with the UDFAs so far.

We must really like what we have Marcus Dixon and the rest of the back-ups.

I still think before TC we may need to pick up a couple DL just for camp bodies.

I find it peculiar as well, especially considering that THREE of our DEs are going to be free agents (restricted or otherwise) after this season.

Yhea, I can't figure out what we're thinking with regards to the DL.

Maybe they want to do a trade or something? Or maybe they take care of it next off-season?

But don't we need more camp bodies at the minimum?

Cowboys signed Virginia WR Kevin Ogletree.

Ogletree has good size (6'2/189), tremendous speed (4.37), and comes from a pro-style offense, but presumably went undrafted because of lingering concerns about his knee. Ogletree missed the 2007 season with a torn ACL.

Didn't see it posted.
