Unleashing Dak for the playoffs - let him run at will

I'd like to see Dak run the ball more. We've got Romo to go in the game if he were to get hurt, it's the playoffs, and adding this wrinkle to the offense would give the defense a lot more to think about. This season he averaged about 5 yds per attempt in rushing, about 3 attempts a game. In college he of course ran with the ball a lot more. Here is a look at those stats:

I wouldn't mind it but I don't think Dak's natural instinct is to throw and only run when necessary. I would feel awful for the guy if he got knocked out during this run.

Wouldn't mind seeing designed naked bootleg runs. That would put tremendous pressure on defenses. Not too many runs though. Gotta protect our franchise QB.

You don't win with a QBs legs in the playoffs, you win with their arm. We need to keep doing what we've done to get to this point. Dak is a pass first QB and only takes off running when everything breaks down or he sees a good opening to make a play with his legs. He maintains being a passer for as long as he can which is one of the reasons he's been so good. That's a quality Joe Montana had. Surprisingly Dak only ran a 4.80 and 4.81 at the combine, thought he was a little faster than that.

I would also like to see Dak take off a little more when it's there. It really puts a lot of stress on a defense when they have to worry about the QB picking up big first downs with his legs.

Food for thought is Green Bay had a hard time with Kaepernick in the playoffs and the zone read play. Look for that play with Dak taking off with the ball. He can also throw from that or give it to Zeke.

Indeed he has. Kaepernick submitted a stat line for the ages in the 2012 playoffs, accounting for four touchdowns and setting the all-time record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 181. He also had his best passing day in the 2013 season opener versus the Packers, throwing for 412 yards and three touchdowns.

“Obviously, we’ve had some issues with him in the past and they’ve gone back to their read-option and so scheme-wise, he definitely stresses you," McCarthy said. "He can make all the throws. He’s a big, athletic guy. He’s a different type of quarterback to prepare for."

If they stack the box then we can roll him out and he will have options, everything on the table in the playoffs.

The only problem with the roll out is defenses have been successfully stopping it lately.

Agreed. I want to see him rolled out more, too.

They're going to stop that rollout to the right....he's not as effective left or it appears that way. But it should open some stuff up esp if they clear the short and intermediate right side then put Beastley into that area. That'll have to be addressed then we'll be back to the rollout again.

My guess is they will give up the short game and dare him to pass mid to long intermediate and over the top. They have their work cut out stopping the run and that roll out as well as the play action.

A visual - specifically these zone read plays. I of course like the "take off and run" plays when no one is open and pass protection is breaking down, also.

Not so much scrambling just to scramble, but having the inner clock ready to go and knowing when to throw it away or pick up 2 yards on the ground before sliding. Sacks and strip sack fumbles are a No-No today.
