ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico sophomore safety Markely Byrd died in a single-car accident near Gallup. He was driving home for the holidays with his girlfriend when their car suffered a blowout on I-40.

They were both ejected. Markel died instantly, and she was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Christmas is going to be a sad time for that family for a very long time.

Prayers for the families as they deal with this. Hopefully the Christmas season will remind them of all the good they still have.

I don't see how people still make excuses for not doing this. One of the absolute stupidest things you can do.

I read too many stories where people are ejected from their cars for me not to wear my seat belt. I also used to talk to law enforcement regularly as a reporter, and they would tell me stories of people dying in accidents they should have walked away from because they weren't wearing seat belts. :(

I remember as a little kid in the 70s literally never wearing a seatbelt. I remember driving to New York from Texas and sat on a cooler in the back seat most of the trip pretending we were flying. Parents would have cps called on them in this day.ha Crazy how times change
