I doubt I will attend an American professional football game in person, again...Far too many violent fans seem to gravitate to games and can't demonstrate consistent sportsmanship let alone a knack for knowing 'when to say when' with the alcohol...All too often, there are plenty of sections that more closely resemble cage matches.

So, apart from Jerry's HD screen, mine at home is just fine for watching

The most raucous sporting event I've ever been to was Man U vs. Arsenal-- and I loved every minute of it. More passion there than at any american football game I've been to-- more drinking, more insults, more everything. Though Ohio State/Michigan comes close.

I agree with almost everything you said.

Rivers is a solid QB but he is in a very QB friendly system, and he's been handing to one of the best backs in football his entire career. He's also got a very reliable TE, one of the best in the game at adjusting and catching anything in the air. Rivers may have won some playoff games but I think Romo is a much better player.

DeSean Jackson has proven he's a # 1 guy in this league, great deep threat and the guy has serious moves. Home run threats like him are few and far between. The real question is - will that puny frame hold up the test of time in this league?
you just described Troy Aikman

What are some consensus football opinions that you vehemently go against the grain with. Are there certain players, coaches, or teams that you feel were extremely overrated - but everyone says you're nuts?

MEion $ander$ was NOT a top-5 CB. His coverage skills were not as great as people want to make them out to be. He was basically a phenomenal athlete with extraordinary speed but he had poor technique and could be beaten by physical WRs. He also had trouble covering short routes and we all know about his "Matador" tackling style. The MYTH that he shut down half the field is a joke. The top QBs didn't avoid him and usually didn't have much trouble completing passes against him.

This is not to say that he wasn't dangerous or couldn't cover anyone but that he relied too much on his closing speed an could be beat by the top WRs. Guys like Mike Haynes, Mel Renfro, Herb Adderley, Lem Barney, Emlen Tunnell, Mel Blount, Daryl Green and even Rod Woodson were better all-around CBs and could cover just as well as Deion.

Deion was a product of the "SportsCenter" age and media hype that focuses on the big plays rather than the entire package. He was basically a one-trick pony. If he could sucker a QB into throwing it to a guy whop appeared to be open then Deion could use his amazing speed to close the gap and pick it off. Chris Berman basically MADE Deion into this mythological player with his "Prime Time" chant and the focus on all the big plays he made.

Everson Walls was just as good at picking off passes as Deion and was a better tackler. In nearly the exact same number of games (188 - 186) Walls has 4 more INTs than Deion. The area where Deion really shined (or is it "shone"?) was as a return man. That showed both in returning punts/kicks as well as INTs. He had INTs returned for TDs compared with Walls' 1.

Deion's big play ability is what made him a "SportsCenter" favorite and generated all the hype surrounding him. As a return man he was amazing but as a CB he was very good but not great. He gave up too many big plays and was not good in covering shorter routes and his unwillingness to risk injury n tackling allowed a lot of big runs against his teams.

The best true shutdown CBs I've ever seen play were Mike Haynes and Herb Adderley. You just didn't complete much against them no matter how good the WR or QB were. Plus they could, and would, tackle.

I completely reject that notion. He had a very good OL and 2 of his guys were great.
Just my opinion. Of course, I was pretty young at that time and did not possess a true understanding of the game until this century, so my opinion is clearly flawed.

All opinions are flawed.

You need a new signature. Badly.

Wade Phillips is very overrated as a defensive coach. what have his defenses ever won?

I don't think Tony Romo is a championship calibur qb

Jason Witten gets away with holding a lot

Donovan McNabb is the best qb in the NFCE

we will not win big with Ratliff at NT

Joe Flacco is gonna win a superbowl

the Patriots are gonna win the Next Superbowl

I hate the glitzy glamorous ways that Jerry has brought to a rediculous level in this franchise.

Most people do. History is on my side. His teams never won and he came up smallest in the biggest games. I was never shocked when he did. That style was a handicap to his team.

I don't think Tony Romo is a championship calibur qb. I think he's plenty good enough but could/should get better. Check past winners as evidence.

Jason Witten gets away with holding a lot. Yes..true. He's still one the 3-4 best in the league.

Donovan McNabb is the best qb in the NFCE. Probably so.

we will not win big with Ratliff at NT. I dunno.

Joe Flacco is gonna win a superbowl. Agree again.

the Patriots are gonna win the Next Superbowl. Pretty good chance.

I hate the glitzy glamorous ways that Jerry has brought to a rediculous level in this franchise. me too

Teams rarely used 8 man fronts to stop Barry. They tried to limit him to 1 or 2 big gains per game. Teams had to deal with Herman Moore and Brett Perriman and Johnny Morton. I saw a stat one time that said if you took away Barry's longest carry in each game of his career that he averaged 2.5 yards per carry on the rest of them. He also lost more yardage than any RB in History.

It is my own wacky opinion but I simply would not want Barry on my team no matter what. Give me a straight ahead runner every time. 2nd & long is a handicap. 3rd & long is even worse. You simply can't beat those odds hoping for your Defense to hold up in the hope that 1 or 2 times a game he is gone for a long score.

Excellent post.

People tend to forget that when the Emmitt v Barry debate begins.

Here are a few more opinions sure to get me fried.......

1. At this point and time, Big Ben is a better QB than Romo.

2. Super Bowl XIII would have been the first SB to have went to O.T. had Jackie Smith caught that TD. Think about the fact that either way, catch or drop, the very next play would have been Septien kicking (field goal or extra point) and then his kicking-off to the Steelers. I don't care what Staubach says, a 6 year old could have caught that pass. Smith slipped but that still does not change the fact that the ball hit him in the chest. Hard but true fact is that Smith's drop lost SB XIII.

3. If the Dallas Cowboys had won SB V, Roger Staubach would have eventually been traded to another team.

4. I totally believe that Bum Bright required Jerry Jones to fire Tom Landry as part of the agreement to sell Jones the team. I am not saying that it was not time for Landry to go, but I think Bum Bright was a sorry owner and was definately not above doing it. Jerry probably was going to let Tom go anyway, but I think Bright was such a low-life that he demanded it.

5. Dexter Manley intentionally injured Danny White in the 1983 NFC Championship game. Look at the replay, Manley went straight for White's head. In the pre-game show, CBS interviewed Manley and ask him how to stop Dallas. His answer was, "Stop White." And thanks to a tissue-paper offensive line, I guess he was good to his word.

Here's where I think you're wrong:

Yes, steady production is always better than Boom-or-bust styles. But Sanders wasn't just a boom-or-bust runner, he was the greatest boom-and-bust runners in the history of the NFL. He had more "booms" than anyone else ever had.

Also, yea people are wrong when they say his offense/offensive line sucked. But they also weren't as great as you're making it out to be. And certainly not as great as Smith's teammates.

So no, Sanders is not the best RB of all time. But I don't see how he's not a top-10 RB, much less a negative for his team.

If Tom Brady is such a great quarterback why did Drew Henson start ahead of him at Michigan and Leonard DiCaprio in front of him with Giesel?
but how you finish. 3 SB to 0 and married to Gisele.

Much like T.O. was a handicap to this team...
