What are some consensus football opinions that you vehemently go against the grain with. Are there certain players, coaches, or teams that you feel were extremely overrated - but everyone says you're nuts?
MEion $ander$ was NOT a top-5 CB. His coverage skills were not as great as people want to make them out to be. He was basically a phenomenal athlete with extraordinary speed but he had poor technique and could be beaten by physical WRs. He also had trouble covering short routes and we all know about his "Matador" tackling style. The MYTH that he shut down half the field is a joke. The top QBs didn't avoid him and usually didn't have much trouble completing passes against him.
This is not to say that he wasn't dangerous or couldn't cover anyone but that he relied too much on his closing speed an could be beat by the top WRs. Guys like Mike Haynes, Mel Renfro, Herb Adderley, Lem Barney, Emlen Tunnell, Mel Blount, Daryl Green and even Rod Woodson were better all-around CBs and could cover just as well as Deion.
Deion was a product of the "SportsCenter" age and media hype that focuses on the big plays rather than the entire package. He was basically a one-trick pony. If he could sucker a QB into throwing it to a guy whop appeared to be open then Deion could use his amazing speed to close the gap and pick it off. Chris Berman basically MADE Deion into this mythological player with his "Prime Time" chant and the focus on all the big plays he made.
Everson Walls was just as good at picking off passes as Deion and was a better tackler. In nearly the exact same number of games (188 - 186) Walls has 4 more INTs than Deion. The area where Deion really shined (or is it "shone"?) was as a return man. That showed both in returning punts/kicks as well as INTs. He had INTs returned for TDs compared with Walls' 1.
Deion's big play ability is what made him a "SportsCenter" favorite and generated all the hype surrounding him. As a return man he was amazing but as a CB he was very good but not great. He gave up too many big plays and was not good in covering shorter routes and his unwillingness to risk injury n tackling allowed a lot of big runs against his teams.
The best true shutdown CBs I've ever seen play were Mike Haynes and Herb Adderley. You just didn't complete much against them no matter how good the WR or QB were. Plus they could, and would, tackle.
