Cowboys run both gap and zone almost evenly.

TP is the better outside zone runner while Zeke is the better gap runner.

Those gap running plays up the middle are usually for the dirty yards to hold on to leads and hammer defenses into dust.

The outside zone plays are usually early in the game trying to create the big play.

I hate having such a boring play caller. His personality shows up on the field. Should have given that job to Romo, Kitna, or Mark Sanchez.

But kudos to the OLine and it's coaches. They all have been doing a bang up job this year. McCarthy too.

No evidence any of them would have been better
For all the trashing of the play calling we was the number one offense last year
I think fans forget that

We haven't won one playoff game since Moore became the OC. I think fans forget that.

He is the son of Marty Schottenheimer, former HC of the Cleaveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. Marty had a real good four year run with Browns. They went to back to back AFC conference championship games and the Browns went to the playoffs all four years.

So it's no surprise that Brian is an expert in the running game.

At a time when it was an extreme rarity, both the fullback and the halfback were thousands yard rushers. Kevin Mack and Ernest Byner formed a formidable offensive backfield.

After leaving Cleveland, Marty became the HC of the Kansa City Chiefs. They went to the playoff seven out of ten seasons on the strength of a very impressive stable of RB's.

Marty had Barry Word, The "Nigerian Nightmare" Christian Okoya, as well as the last five years of Marcus Allen's career. Marty had some really stout run blockers on his O-line, guys like T John Alt, C Tim Grunhard and HOFer G Will Shields.

The roots of Brian Schottenheimers offensive philosophy is obvious.

Marty also had Tomlinson with the Chargers.

Also had a young Drew Brees.

Because Cowboys defense was so so bad the last 4 seasons. Even last season defense was a no show in postseason.

I think fans forget that too.
You don't need a defense if you can outscore your opponents.

If your defense is designed to get after the QB, then the offense is being trusted to put up a lot of points and take the lead. And that is exactly how this Cowboy team is built.

The one gap system is designed to put pressure on the QB. So a team doesn't need the best of the best in it's secondary, in theory. It's front seven is where they are going to spend their money on defense. They're going to load up on offense and make sure the front seven on defense can get after the QB. That is the ideal that this team is built on. But fans tend to forget or overlook the formula on which this team was built.

That's why we've spent so much money on the offensive side of the ball all of these years. It's supposed to be an offense first team. Our struggles on offense, at times, don't come from lack of talent. They come from Moore's play calling. The formula is there, the players fit the formula...now it's up to the coaches.

Garrett wasn't a bad coach he just had bad coordinators.

Walk around head coaches rely heavily on their coordinators. In that situation you have to have good coordinators. Marinelli was definitely the wrong guy.

Kellen Moore is trying, faithfully, to overcome his reputation as an average play caller these days. Perhaps Brian Schottenheimer deserves some of the credit for that. In any event, let's hope the new and improved version of Kellen Moore manages to continue enjoying this recent success. Hope for the future seems to require it. ;)

Good article, but it failed to mention that Mike worked for Marty as a young coach and frequently cites Marty's positive influence on him in his press conferences.

There is only one back that is actually running the ball really well and that is Pollard. Zeke is having one of the worst years of his career if not his worst. And that was a healthy Zeke. Who knows what we are going to see now that he is banged up again.
