SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Volatile wide receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas exchanged blows during a sideline altercation during Friday morning's practice at Wofford College.
The two men were on the sidelines while the team was working through special teams drills when a fight broke out They exchanged several punches before teammates and coach John Fox charged in to break up the fight.
It took several people to restrain the men and restore order.
Neither player was wearing a helmet at the time of the fight.
Lucas was then taken under the tent at the practice field and treated by trainer Ryan Vermillion. His face was bloodied and he appeared to have a large gash under his left eye. He held ice on the eye for several minutes before being taken to the locker room on a cart
A few minutes later, Smith later came over, with Muhsin Muhammad and another coach by his side and appeared to ry and reconcile with Smith. The two men briefly exchanged a hug. Smith left and later came back to check on Lucas again.
Smith, who seemed upset by the incident, then walked over and talked to friend John Kasay.
Smith did not return to practice. He left the field early, escorted to the locker room by general manager Marty Hurney.
At one point, Hurney had his arm wrapped around Smith's shoulder.
The incident brings up reminders of Smith's film room attack on wide receiver Anthony Bright in 2002. Smith took exception to something Bright said in the film room and began throwing punches, damaging Bright's facial structure. Bright later pressed charges against Smith but the suit was settled out of court.
Smith was suspended one game for that attack.
Fox said it's unclear at this point if any suspensions will be handed down.
"We haven't had much time to talk about it, but it will be dealt with internally," coach John Fox said after practice.
Fox said he had no update on Lucas' status.
"I think anytime something like that happens you are disappointed," Fox said. "It's part of football and you deal with it."
Fox would not say what caused the incident.
"I'm not going to deal with this in the media," Fox said.
There has been some bad blood between Smith and Lucas in the past, although they've never come to blows.
