Fabiano Caruana to Join the U.S. Chess Federation World's Number Three Chess Player Seeks to Represent the United States Once Again

ST. LOUIS, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Chess Federation (USCF) today announced that Fabiano Caruana has initiated the application process to change chess federations, which, when approved, will allow him to play for the United States. Fabiano, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Italy, has been playing for the Italian Chess Federation for a number of years.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be representing the United States again and working with the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis. I'd like to thank everybody who has made this possible, and I look forward to this exciting new partnership," said Fabiano Caruana."In addition, I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude for the support given to me over the past ten years by the Italian Chess Federation. I wish them all the best for the future."

When complete, this change will unite Fabiano Caruana, who is ranked third in the world, with Hikaru Nakamura, the world's fourth ranked player and Wesley So who is ninth, under the United States flag.

"The addition of Fabiano Caruana to the United States' roster is historic. For the first time in history the United States will have three of the top ten players in world," said Jean Hoffman, Executive Director of the USCF. "Over the past several years, we have made tremendous strides to increase the awareness of, and appreciation for, the great game of chess in the United States. The return of Fabiano to the USCF is another large step toward achieving our goals."

Both Cauana and Nakamura of the USA (#2 and #4 in the world rankings right now) qualified for what's known as the Candidates tournament just yesterday. This is a major deal. The next Candidates is in 2016.

The significance? The WINNER of that tournament gets the honor of facing current #1 ranked and World Champion Magnus Carlsen for the next World Championship match. So...now the USA has two primary contenders guaranteed a shot at becoming World Champion if one of them wins the Candidates. Last time the USA had a World Champion...? Bobby Fischer ring a bell...?

He holds dual citizenship of both countries. He has been playing for Italy for a long time, but for some reason (read: $$$) decided recently to switch to the US Federation...

What' wrong with that? I love watching the girls play softball. It's fun. It's competitive. It's pure. And like CHESS, it's an olympic sport.

What would you rather see? Softball or that poker crap that isn't even a sport?

I understand him having dual citizenship. I was curious to know why he chose Italy over the USA originally. Was it because in Italy he would be a big fish in a small pond? I admit my knowledge of professional chess is severely lacking and maybe Italian chess is much stronger than it is in the USA, but it's hard for me to "root" for him as an American player when his allegiance was with a different county originally. Even if he chased the $$ to come to America (which is American as it gets) it seems he is only a hired gun.

I see your point, but this guy is pretty good... #2 in the world and getting better...he's young and really, really good. I have no idea why he chose Italy previously.

Did he used to represent the US? It sounds like he is "coming back to the US" by what he said.

(shortened version - just under 3 minutes)

Watch World Champion Magnus Carlsen completely destroy 3 opponents simultaneously - while he is blindfolded.
