The 2018 offseason saw the Dallas Cowboys take a huge leap in terms of roster turnover. The Cowboys got even younger and guys who weren’t on the team the previous year became significant contributors. With the 2019 offseason finally getting some traction, ESPN took the time to revisit the 2018 offseason and grade the Cowboys offseason moves from last year.

Dallas Cowboys
Re-grade: C | Offseason grade: C

The Cowboys tried to address their receiver situation in the offseason and might have been better off not winning a bidding war for Sammy Watkins. However, the team’s failure to address the position adequately during the offseason proved costly when Dallas, desperate for an offensive spark, acquired Amari Cooper from Oakland for a first-round pick in late October.

Cooper helped the offense, but his upcoming contract demands could create challenges for a Dallas team with several young players in line for new deals.

Dallas’ grade holds firm, however, because the team fared well with first-round pick Leighton Vander Esch. Other early draft choices also showed promise.

ESPN focused on the Cowboys inability to land a significant replacement for Dez Bryant or a No. 1 receiving option at all until they traded their 2019 first rounder for Cooper.

Cooper proved valuable posting 53 catches for 725 yards with 6 touchdowns in just 9 games for the Cowboys. Cooper’s contract does loom large but if the last few years is any indication the Cowboys tend to take care of their own well before choosing to spend premium money or assets for outside help.

Vander Esch and the 2018 draft class provided the Cowboys with 3 starters by the end of the season and guys the Cowboys will look to take huge leaps forward heading into 3019. Notably, those guys are receiver Michael Gallup and offensive lineman Connor Williams.

Dallas has made some minor moves thus far in 2019 free agency, and will try to avoid once again being seen in the middle of the NFL pack.
