Life, death, taxes, and the Dallas Cowboys sitting out on the first wave of free agency, these are all things that are certain in life. As teams are working on getting better after the ‘legal tampering’ period began, the Cowboys, as expected, haven’t made any significant additions.

Cowboys’ fans, also as expected, are up in arms about the lack of aggressiveness. No one should be surprised, though. Stephen Jones, Cowboys executive VP, said he wasn’t going to be active in signing outside free agents, especially for the ridiculous money that has been tossed around. This has been the path the organization has taken in recent years. Yet somehow, there is still such dismay and frustration when Dallas stands pat early on in free agency.

The only thing many felt would change this off-season was the chance to add Earl Thomas. The courting between the Cowboys and Thomas has been well documented dating back to the 2017 season when Thomas told Jason Garrett to “come get him.” Now that the Cowboys finally had the chance to attain the highly-coveted safety, the team still hasn’t signed him.

If there was ever a time for the Cowboys to dip their toe into free agency waters early, this would be it. However, the price remains the issue. Other free agent safeties are getting huge deals worth $13-$14 million annually, something the team doesn’t seem willing to pay.

It isn’t just the safeties that are getting paid either. There are record contracts being doled out across the league in free agency and there are some marginal players getting hefty raises.

Bash the Cowboys, but it feels like common sense sitting out of the madness for now. Dallas isn’t the only team sitting out to this point, either.

As of 9:30am Eastern 3/12/19:

There are now 18 teams who have agreed to terms with new UFAs.

Here are the 14 remaining teams:

Cowboys (Not counting that TE project)
Giants
Saints
Falcons
Panthers
Bucs
Seahawks
Patriots
Dolphins
Steelers
Ravens
Bengals
Texans
Chargers

The team does need to use free agency at some point, but not wanting to pay these exorbitant prices is a smart move. They are missing out on these high priced players, but there is plenty of talent still available.

The real issue for the Cowboys is now the price seems to be going up on players like DeMarcus Lawrence and Cole Beasley. Free agency has driven the price up on pass rushers, as well as slot receivers. However, this is a ‘Cowboys should’ve extended them sooner,’ issue not a ‘team isn’t using free agency correctly’ thing.

The Cowboys are watching and waiting through the first wave of free agency. It might be painful to see other teams acquiring talent only to have Dallas stay on the sidelines, but it feels like the right move.
