25-year-old David Irving has shown flashes of brilliance at times in his four seasons in Dallas, racking up 7 sacks in just 8 games in 2017 in between a performance-enhancement suspension to start the season and a concussion that ended it. The undrafted Iowa State product was suspended again by the league to start the 2018 season, and has been on the outs with the club since, having appeared in just two games this past season.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, enough is enough. A source has said that the team “has no intention of keeping” the mercurial defensive tackle.

Irving suffered a high-ankle sprain against Washington in October and never took the field again. “He was not as aggressive with his rehab as club officials wanted,” writes Moore, “and only sporadically appeared at The Star in the closing weeks of the season after receiving a second opinion.”

Post-injury, Irving reportedly “sort of checked out” and missed multiple mandatory drug tests.

Given our recent scoop that David Irving failed 'multiple drug tests' while NOT rehabbing his ankle and not showing up to work, yeah, #Cowboys don't really want him back, no. https://t.co/yiEvpIXigb

The cost to acquire the flashes of production from Irving was minimal. He was not a draft pick, but rather was poached off the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad after going undrafted. As suspended players don’t get paid, he’s made just under $3.6 million with Dallas, in exchange for 12.5 sacks.

In a nutshell, Dallas is still well ahead of the curve, but their desire to move on seems well placed.

If Irving is, in fact, allowed to test the waters of free agency, it will mark the end of a roller-coaster career as a Cowboy. He was an absolute monster when he was on the field, bullying offenses and terrorizing quarterbacks with dominant performances. It’s been his off-the-field demons, however, that seem to get the best of him far too often, unfortunately keeping him off the field.

As he’s leaving under an expired contract, Irving will be part of the compensatory formula for the 2020 NFL draft.
