The Dallas Cowboys began off Phase One of their off-season program at The Star this week, a sign things are starting to get cranked up for the organization in preparation for the 2019 season. In what might be deemed a minor surprise, star running back Ezekiel Elliott showed up for the workouts.

There were some who believed Elliott might skip the workouts as a way to go about getting a new contract with the team. To everyone’s delight, Elliott showed up willingly and ready to work.

Actually … here’s @EzekielElliott posting from his IG outside the Cowboys facility early this AM. So he’s there. And like we said in @theMMQB, he’s been a regular at the facility over the last couple months. pic.twitter.com/jnJiroIFOE

It shouldn’t be a surprise the two-time rushing champion showed up.

Elliott has never expressed any discontent with his contract or mentioned he wouldn’t be at workouts without a new deal. Most of the speculation came from sources outside of the Cowboys.

There was some thought that #Cowboys star RB Ezekiel Elliott would stay away as he waits for the team to focus on his contract extension. But Elliott will be there today, source said, for offseason conditioning. He’s kept it status quo.

It’s nice to see a player show up for work when under a contract. No fuss was made, no demands, just a player showing up for work despite swirling rumors that he wouldn’t. It’s a good look for a player trying to get a new contract.

Although Elliott is one of the best running backs in the league, the Cowboys don’t need to extend him yet. His contract won’t be up for another two years (unrestricted free agent in 2021) and the team has a few more pressing players to re-sign before they get to Elliott. Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper should have new deals done before Dallas turns their attention to Elliott.

None of that means he won’t get a new deal from the team, but it’s a show of good faith from Elliott to attend the workouts. It lets the team know he is willing to come to work if he indeed does want a new deal sooner rather than later.

This is also a side effect of the Cowboys taking care of DeMarcus Lawrence. Lawrence was willing to work out with the team before he got a new contract and trusted the team was going to do the right thing and sign him. By getting a deal done with Lawrence, other key members of the Cowboys can believe they will be rewarded as well. Elliott certainly falls into that category.

Elliott showing up for work outs with the team is another positive sign in what has become a very successful off-season for the Cowboys. Rest easy Cowboys Nation, Ezekiel Elliott is here to work.
