Demarcus Lawrence is looking to be compensated as one of the highest paid defenders in the game of football. The Cowboys have placed the franchise tag on Lawrence for the second consecutive offseason and the team’s best defensive player has said he will not play on it again, as he looks for long-term financial security.

With the threat of a holdout looming and organized team activities right on the other side of next month’s draft, there is potential for the gulf to widen between Lawrence and the organization. Also involved is Lawrence’s pending shoulder surgery, which he is using as counter-leverage against the team. While all of this is going on though, Lawrence is still working out with his teammates.

According to Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan and CBS 247 Sports, Lawrence joined the Cowboys captains of the team for workouts, a sign of good faith by Lawrence.

With rumors of Lawrence feeling disrespected by the franchise during contract negotiations, the fact that the Boise Staten alum is showing up without pay to lead with the rest of the captains of the team is an act of extending an olive branch with the organization. While Dallas seems fully prepared to play hardball with Lawrence, his commitment to the process is still going strong.

Lawrence’s situation isn’t all that different from the one WR Dez Bryant went through with the Cowboys back in 2015.

Slapped with the franchise tag himself, Bryant stayed away from the team’s offseason program, but did show up, out of contract, to a few events to work with his teammates, most notably one of the team’s final minicamp sessions. Bryant and the team eventually agreed to a $70 million dollar extension.

While Bryant, like Lawrence, was looking to get paid, he still showed the team that he was committed to winning with the team, and being a leader of the team. Lawrence has now followed in Bryant’s footsteps to a degree. The two sides will now see if they are able to continue following the same path.
