Despite claiming a divisional crown in 2018 and making it to the second round of the postseason, the Cowboys continue to be labeled as also-rans when the so-called experts start predicting 2019 finishes.

In the latest edition of his Football Morning in America column, SI.com’s Peter King puts Dallas squarely in the middle of the league pack, assigning them the No. 16 spot in his 2019 Power Rankings.

King explains.

“Best news of the offseason for the Cowboys, easily, didn’t come in free agency (though re-signing pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence for five years was big) or the draft. It came on the field in the last few weeks, when the Cowboys have seen the best center in football, Travis Frederick, return to form after missing 2018 with an autoimmune disorder that attacked his nervous system and left him feeling weak for months. ‘He looks really good,’ said coach Jason Garrett. ‘It’s good to see him out there in a stance, running football plays.’ In 2017, with Frederick as the linchpin, Dallas had the best line in the NFC. The Cowboys can reclaim that if Frederick’s back whole.”

But King goes on to devote a fair portion of the rest of the column to the Cowboys’ contract discussions with the men that line would be blocking for, Ezekiel Elliot and Dak Prescott.

King believes the team should pay Prescott to a mega-deal, something in the vicinity of 5 years/$150 million ($90 million guaranteed), he writes, “before he plays well enough this year to push him into Russell Wilson land.”

“Prescott’s not a top-five quarterback,” King continues, “but you can absolutely win with him, and he can play well enough in and out of the pocket to be competitive in the biggest games on the schedule… For those who swear he’s not worth it, ask yourself this question: What is the alternative, and are you willing to let Prescott walk away while the Cowboys go the draft-and-develop route in the near future?”

King then breaks down the 20 first-round quarterbacks from the past seven drafts, and makes the case that Prescott has “at least a slight edge” on 14 of them. He also reminds readers that Jerry Jones has a checkered past when it comes to identifying can’t-miss talent at the position; Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook, King reveals, were the team’s true QB targets the year they ended up settling for Prescott.

As for Elliott’s next payday, King lets ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and guest co-host/former Cowboys player Marcus Spears have it out over whether the defending rushing champ is worth breaking the bank for.

"I hate that I have to say this. But when you pay a running back, you are always paying them for the past. And almost never for the future."

The team has said they want to lock up Elliott with a long-term deal. But under Greenberg’s philosophy, the team has less than two years to find the workhorse to replace him.
