The Dallas Cowboys spent three years trying to turn Rico Gathers into a football player. Whether or not they try a fourth time remains to be determined, but if he does make the squad out of training camp, whether in Dallas or elsewhere, he’ll have to serve a one-game suspension before suiting up during the 2019 season. Gathers was suspended by the league over a marijuana arrest last August.

The suspension length of one game indicates Gathers is being punished for the arrest and not a series of failed tests. The latter has escalating penalties where the first suspension is for four games.

Everything was captured in the officer’s bodycam video.

Gathers was arrested August 31 on possession of marijuana, the day before the Dallas Cowboys’ final roster cuts. In the video, Gathers is seen on a park bench with a female companion, at night, when they are approached by two Frisco police officers. The video is the capture from one of the officer’s body cams.

After a conversation about the smell of marijuana in the air, Gathers turns over what appears to be unsmoked marijuana and is subsequently arrested for possession.

Gathers was originally drafted in the sixth round by the Cowboys out of Baylor, and while there was an understanding that there was a learning curve, converting from basketball player to tight end, the fourth year vet has failed to make much of an impact during his stint with the Cowboys.

He appeared in 15 games for the Cowboys in 2018, technically starting four of them. He finished with three receptions on seven targets for 45 yards. They are the only games and catches of his career.
