Remember all the obsessive wallet-watching regarding DeMarcus Lawrence that occupied all of every single minute of the entire month of March? He wanted to sign. The team wanted him back. The fans wanted it to happen. They will! They won’t! They might! And as fans waited, every soundbite in every interview suddenly took on some double meaning as the player and front office sniffed around each other. Every day that a deal wasn’t announced had Cowboys Nation on pins and needles, fearing an ugly split.

Welcome to Days of Our Lives: The Amari Cooper Edition.

Despite the team making it plain that re-inking Cooper, who’s entering the final year of his current contract, is a priority, Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweeted Monday the negotiations have turned into another staring contest between the Cowboys brass and a star player.

Per a source, contract talks between the Cowboys and receiver Amari Cooper remain at a stalemate, stuck in neutral and going nowhere _ however, you want to characterize it.

It was less than two weeks ago that rumors were swirling about Cooper’s “shockingly high” salary demands, which were quickly followed by other reports that the veteran wide receiver had yet to even furnish an offer to the team.

From Cooper himself, it’s been seemingly mixed messages. On the one hand, he’s been chatting with the aforementioned Lawrence about the money he’s going to have with his “next contract.” On the other hand, Cooper has gone on record as saying he’s “not worried” about his contract, and that his focus this spring has been instead on developing chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott (who’s in line for a new deal of his own) in their first offseason together.

There were tense moments during the Lawrence dealings. It was often a stalemate, stuck in neutral, going nowhere, however you want to characterize it. That’s just the nature of big-money contract talks between marquee players and high-profile franchises, especially when it also plays out in public.

Cooper and the Cowboys will likely find a middle ground that works for both sides. The team wouldn’t have given up a first-round draft pick for a player they intended to let walk out the door after just a season and a half.

For now, though, every day a deal isn’t done is just another chapter in the everlasting soap opera that is the Dallas Cowboys. This one should have a happy ending, but there were always going to be a couple of cliffhangers along the way.
