Romo Passing the ‘Show Me’ Test?
By Rafael Vela

The coaches and brass must really like what they see.

Tony Romo got his first strong endorsement when the Cowboys passed on Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn last month.

Now comes word that the Cowboys and Romo’s agent are discussing a new contract. The player hopes to have it signed before the season starts.

Typical Jerry. His gambling self is willing to roll the dice on a player with ten starts on his resume. And yet, it’s consistent Jerry. His offseason blueprint contained many steps to develop number nine; Romo’s new mentor Jason Garrett, you’ll recall, was hired before HC Wade Phillips.

I’d wait until Romo showed me more consistently and just plain more. Jerry handed out some large contracts last year and some players, most notably Roy Williams and Bradie James, turned in underwhelming years.

If Jerry hits, he’ll reap the benefits for a long time. Signing Romo now will likely hold his price down, compared to waiting and seeing Romo turn in another Pro Bowl season. And putting his big contract on the books this season staggers the cap pain and frees Dallas to slot Terence Newman into 2008’s offseason.

Ellis must be fuming with anger.

Why? Romo is in his last year of his contract while Ellis has 2 or 3 years left on his. Dallas evidently does not want to risk heading into next season with Romo as a URFA. 2 different situations

I would resign Romo. ...based on what he does after the first 10 games of this coming season. If he is performing well during the first ten games of the season, I don't want him testing free agency.

On the other hand, if he has a nice first 10 games, then his agent might be smart to use the excuse of Romo not wanting to talk contracts while the season is still underway. If you wait and he explodes, then you've pretty much lost any leverage. If you do it now, you can probably still use that leverage.

I guess it all comes down to how much you believe in the player.

That's a good plan . . . unless Romo does well and decides he can do real well in free agency. He doesn't have to take what the Cowboys offer, and if he doesn't get what he wants, the only way the team can keep him is by franchising him at very high cost.

Jones probably considers the risk and thinks it is better to get in on the ground floor while the growth potential is somewhat speculative than it would be to chance seeing yourself having to pay triple for what Romo stock would have cost earlier -- if later he can get it at all.

I would resign him right now. There is no way what he did for 10 games was just a fluke. You can see his intangibles and leadership, and his coolness under pressure. You gotta resign him now.
