IRVING, Texas – Unlike the first two games he’s been with the team, veteran quarterback Matt Cassel expects to be in uniform Sunday when the Patriots come to town.

Cassel, a former backup to Tom Brady who once won 10 games during the 2008 season for the Pats, wouldn’t speculate his exact role for this week, only that he won’t be in street clothes.

“I’ll be up this week. I don’t know exactly how they’re going to place me in the depth chart,” Cassel said. “I felt I had a great two weeks. It was a good lead-in. I feel like I’m capable of running the offense at this point.”

For the last two weeks, Cassel has been the third quarterback, and inactive against the Falcons and Saints. Kellen Moore has been the primary backup toBrandon Weeden as the Cowboys continue to play without injured starter Tony Romo.

After a week of practice, the word around Valley Ranch is that Cassel will be the backup to Weeden.

While Cassel is hardly a young player now, he’s still new to the offense. So he’s been able to pick up some things from Romo.

“Well, he’s been in and out, obviously rehabbing,” Cassel said of the Cowboys’ starter. “But I’ve picked up a lot just listening to what he’s had to say in meeting. He’s a smart player who has been in this offense for a long time.”

I wonder how much help Romo is giving Cassel, since he's buddies with Weeden.

He's doing all he can. Romo does what's best for the team.

I'm sure Romo is helping out Cassel any way he can.

I hope so, we need a change at QB this week!

I'm not opposed to Cassel but who plays will normally be based on what the coaches see through out the week. It is not a situation where gosh lets see if he can play, they get a good sense during the week. When or if Cassel gets a start great until then I have not been unhappy with Weeden, I have been very unhappy with defense and hoping that too will change starting this weekend. If it doesn't then who starts at QB really does not matter

I get your point, hopefully we'll see an upgrade with our defense with the 2 suspenders coming and Lee hopefully playing a full game. Hopefully Cassel can make passes to all 3 sections of the field and not just center and right, giving us 33% more opportunities :)

I highly doubt Cassel starts if he does I will back him. However should he come in throwing ints, I would pull his butt in a second. I don't expect backups to carry the team but throwing ints will get you blown out quick. People are getting on Weeden because the staff is keeping things close to the vest they do not want turnovers, hell the way defense has played we can't afford turnovers since we can't stop people driving 80 and 90 yards so giving a short field is the last thing they want. I'm sorry I just can't get on this anti Weeden bandwagon, I think he has done what is being asked and I can't pin these past 2 games on him as easily as others have

No problem, but I disagree. I figure Cassel needs to open things up a little to help the running game. Obviously what we have been doing hasn't been winning, so you have to shake things up.

We can shake things up all day but if defense does not do their jobs it really does not matter. We don't sack the QB, we do not tackle and we do not get turnovers unless that starts happening Cassel is not going to make a differance.

i cannot hep but think that if Cassell ever gets in a game, last summer i could half bet $100 in Vegas that one Cowboys game would feature Cassell passing to Beasley. I would make like a hundred thousands dollars and speed up the plans for world domination.
