Skippy is missing a bunch of things...but it's not like he's totally wrong.
We didn't have much time left, so running the ball on the 2nd to last play would be a horrendous playcall. Running it on the last play would've probably gotten stuffed and would've been a very bad call.
Roy Williams was injured. He may not play next week. All because Romo overthrew him badly previously in the game.
Marion was still dealing with the quad, Felix was out and Choice was our last guy. The Broncos were forcing Romo to beat them over the top and he couldn't find open receivers (there were open receivers, Romo just didn't see them) or he would badly miss the pass. Tough to run a lot when you have the opposing defense stacking 8 or 9 in the box and daring the QB to beat them deep. And we only had one healthy RB at the time.
I do agree with the Witten as a decoy. Makes little sense. If you want to use him as a decoy, use him as a receiving decoy. Nothing tells me that the passes to Hurd were etched in stone as the guy to throw to on those plays. Going at Champ Bailey isn't really hazardous to do these days, but I would prefer to not do it twice in a row. But I don't think Garrett said 'this is what we are doing', I think Romo had options.
The first slant pass should've been caught, not the second one.
I think we've given Romo enough time and we've made enough excuses for him. He's no longer that young QB who just needs to learn and gain experience and he will improve. He's the veteran QB who is seeing his game rapidly regress, much like his predecessor Drew Bledsoe did when he was playing in New England. Although they are two different style of QB's.
Romo has lost his ability to anticipate on his throws and that to me, along with pocket presence (which Romo has lost a little bit as well) is the lifeblood of a good QB. We've seen all sorts of successful QB's in the NFL, from the weak armed, to the inaccurate to the scramblers to slower than molasses QB's, but the great ones all anticipate well and have great pocket presence. And I think once you lose those two facets of the game, you probably don't get them back. The only guy I can think of that 'lost it' and then regained it was Kurt Warner.
And Romo is always good at getting the ball down the field when we need it? Yeah, he was fantastic at moving the ball for the Steelers last year in Pittsburgh (a game we would've won by at least 20 IN Pittsburgh if Romo played decent).
I saw a lot of this last year when Owens was getting open and Romo either didn't see him or missed him badly on the pass. Now we have a new set of WR's and they are getting open and Romo doesn't see them or misses them badly with the pass. After awhile I can't keep believing that every WR that comes here can't get open and/or runs the wrong routes and that it's #9 that is the issue.
