Can Miles Austin become a major contributor for this Cowboys offense in 2009?

That's the question a lot of Cowboys fans are asking right now because the Cowboys are certainly going to give him a shot at becoming a big part of the Sunday gameplan if we go on everything that has been said this offseason.

Here's Miles on DFW Sportsbeat talking about the 2009 season...

If I know one thing, it's that Miles Austin has the right attitude.

This Cowboys offense is going to be just fine in 2009.

Gurode not being able to help Romo with protection schemes/blitz pickup properly is okay by you? Along with his inability to snap a football he needs to be playing guard already. Dude is a liability.

Couldn't disagree more. Best Center in the NFC by a wide margin. Was a so so Guard.

He would be if it wasn't for the snap problems. But it happens, and I would take Gurode over nearly every Center.

The old Flozell conundrum. Danged if you do, danged if you don't. Gurode's frustrates me more than anyone not named Romo on the offensive side of the ball. I cringe everytime the Cowboys are in the shotgun because I know the ball is going into his hands awkwardly or possibly over his head. That's not to mention propensity to make some kind of mental error at any point in the game. To me he hurts the offense nearly as much as he helps it. I'm REALLY disappointed that we didn't get Unger and even moreso that we didn't get ANY center prospect in the draft.

Shotgun snaps are a tiny % of what you need from a Center. No one playing that position outblocks him. Would you rather have a guy who snaps perfectly or a guy who is a top notch blocker?

So if we got Unger, you'd do what, bench Gurode? How many times does he have to prove he's not nearly as good at guard?

IMO we shouldn't be in the shotgun so often anyway. Norv pretty much never uses it and it doesn't hurt his offense.

That's why I love him. He fires off the ball and blocks so well, and that's probably partly why the snaps are a little "off" sometimes. He's ready to hit someone in the the back of the mouth on every snap. Give me the blocker...

Possibly use Unger on third downs/shotgun plays and of course as a backup center/guard assuming he didn't outright win the left guard position. Even if he outright won the left guard position, I'd slide him over to center when the situation called for it. Maybe that's not too practical, but it'd be better than having Gurode out there.

I completely disagree again.

I think this is silly. The man is a 3 straight years Pro Bowl Center and was a mediocre Guard. Tinkering gone too far and thinking outside the box gone sour.

That sums it up. No doubt, Gurode is the best center in the conference, and arguably the NFL. But what I found most surprisng is that Miles Austin referet to Kyle Kossier (sp?) as "THE GLUE of that offensive line". Any idea why that is?

He supposedly calls out the blocking assignments and is smart.

Maybe he's the manager of Free Reign?

Doesn't it concern you that it's not Gurode?

No doubt he's the best blocking center in the NFC, but, to give you a dose of your own medicine, that's not all a center does. A center needs to snap the ball, and he needs to be the QB of the OL (make the blocking assignment calls). I don't think Kosier is such a good blocker that we missed him last year. I think Gurode didn't have anyone to make the calls for him when Kosier was out. That's a big weakness for a center in my book.

Let's take up the Gurode debate again after the first WAS game next year.

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure Austin knows what he is talking about when it comes to the offensive line. He might, but just the fact he mispronounced Kosier's name doesn't bode well.
