Monday afternoon update

October 15th, 2007 – 1:14 PM by Kevin Seifert

A few notes from coach Brad Childress’ afternoon news conference:

*On the injury front, LB Vinny Ciurciu has a high ankle sprain and RB Naufahu Tahi has a sprained MCL in his knee. Tahi probably will miss at least one week. It will be interesting to see if his injury affects the team’s willingness to consider trade offers for RB Mewelde Moore, who was inactive again Sunday at Chicago. The NFL trading deadline is tomorrow.

*OL Anthony Herrera played well in the Vikings’ 34-31 victory and will remain the starting right guard, Childress said. He said the entire offensive line looked like it was “totally in harmony” Sunday.

*The Vikings’ plan was to kick away from Bears PR Devin Hester, but P Chris Kluwe didn’t get his first punt out of bounds. Hester caught it at the 11-yard line and raced for an 89-yard return. Childress made clear that punt was supposed to go out of bounds. “Disappointed in that,” Childress said.

*Defensive coaches are looking for ways to keep LB Ben Leber in the game during some nickel situations. In that scenario, LB Chad Greenway would come to the sideline. Leber and Greenway “have the same skill sets,” Childress said, and the disparity between their playing time is too great.

*Childress continued to refer to RB Adrian Peterson as the Vikings’ backup tailback but said reporters are the only people who seem surprised by that. Peterson, for one, is not. “He’s just happy to contribute,” Childress said.

*Childress did acknowledge the team took extra care to keep track of Peterson’s touches Sunday to make sure they did not have a repeat of the Sept. 30 game against Green Bay. In that contest, Peterson made it onto the field for only 25 of the Vikings’ 65 plays. Against the Bears, Peterson was in for 34 of their 67 plays. RB Chester Taylor was on the field for 36 plays.

Neon Deion praises Peterson
Had to share this comment from Deion Sanders on Vikings rookie RB Adrian Peterson.

"He has the vision of a Marshall Faulk, the power of a Terrell Davis, and the speed of an Eric Dickerson," said Sanders, now an NFL Network analyst. "Let’s pray he has the endurance of an Emmitt Smith."

Well spoken.

Meanwhile, here's what former NFL coach Steve Mariucci had to say about A.D.

"He is developing his skills as a receiver and in pass protection, but as a runner he has got it," said Mariucci, who also is an NFL Network analyst. "The thing that was impressive today was his endurance and his stamina. He seemed to get stronger as the game went along."

Sorry, Brad, they're not 'the only ones.'

Try asking your fanbase or anyone else on the planet with a brain.

That team is successful despite what this arrogant, brain-dead moron thinks or says.

Peterson won that game single-handedly despite his coach giving him just 20 carries.

And that defense was put together before Childress ever got there.

That idiot has done nothing but collect bad receivers and draft an incapable quarterback.

His team succeeds despite his best efforts.

Brad Childress = Rich Kotite II

Why are they limiting Peterson so much? I haven't really read much about the situation.

My belief is that it's another dumb decision by an incapable coach.

I read that the 'braintrust' had issues with his pass protection, but when your receivers and quarterback are that bad and this kid is this good, why pass?

If the Vikings had anything resembling a QB and WR they'd be a playoff team for sure. But thanks to Childress the 'offensive genius', they don't.

He is a rookie maybe they dont want him to run into the rookie wall at the end of the season.

The Vikings need to split the carries between Peterson and Taylor. Lets not forget that Adrian Peterson has had injury issues all threw out his college career.

The NFL is a two back league these days, the RB's just take way to much of a pounding, that they need to have someone to split the carries with.

I actually think Adrian Peterson is the best back in the NFL right now, and I can't figure out Brad Childress. Actually, I think he's an egomaniac who isn't a very good coach. Not that I would want to wear out AD either, but he is the team's best player...
