Joe Montana (1979 Cotton Bowl) -- Montana battled through hypothermia most of the game, even needing a serving of bouillon to bring his temperature back up. With the Irish trailing Houston 34-12, Montana led a stunning comeback, culminated by his game-winning touchdown pass in the 35-34 Notre Dame victory.

That made me laugh.

Hardly a profile in courage.

While Emmitt's performance was great, Kirk Gibson (1988 World Series Game 1), and Kellen Winslow (1981 NFL Divisional Playoffs vs. Dolphins) were amazing also.

While Byron Leftwich's was cool also, I think he mostly did it for show before the draft. :thumbdo:

I don't know the *whole* story behind all of them.

Unreal that Brett Favre playing in a meaningless game after a death and Curt Chilling's fake sock are 1 and 2.

I remember watch that SD Miami game and just being amazed at how Winslow kept coming back. It's like James Brown with the cape. :D

I didn't like the write-up they did on Emmitt's performance.. It seemed that they went out of their way to add "drama" to the write-ups on everyone else.. there were so many elements to that game and that performance, and they just gave a few scant facts..

While a death in the family is a huge thing, you have the ability to block that out of your mind when you focus. Intense pain on the other have is much more difficult to do and why I think it's dumb that Favre is #1 in the list.

I think magnitude of the situation should factor in, too. Favre beat the Raiders in a meaningless regular season game. Emmitt put it on the line when it mattered. Jordan laid it out there in the Finals. Favre is such a darling.:(

I wanted to say the same thing, but I didn't want to sound cold.. I agree completely.. I wouldn't call it "gutsy".. I think that it is actually a good escape from the pain.. I would call it "memorable" but not "gutsy"..

Michael Chang's victory over Ivan Lendl is something I'll never forget.

I still voted for Emmitt, though. :D

Yeah, and I remember Shawn Bradly had food poisoning and was running to the bathroom during the game yet he still scored 10 points, 5 boards and 5 blocks!! against the Celtics (I beleive) back in 2002.

My point is playing sick is very normal and if you are the star player and it's the playoffs. You're expected to play sick. You get paid millions of dollars. I discount playing sick compared to playing with an extremely painful injury.

That and the screwed up the facts. Emmitt separated his shoulder later in the 2nd quarter, not in the 3rd quarter. He refused painkillers at halftime and typically most injuries get worse as a player rests during the break.

If I wasn't a Cowboys fan I would have voted for Kellen Winslow and put Emmitt 2nd but since I am a Cowboys fan I voted for Emmitt.

Favre's wasn't particularly "gutsy" IMO but it did take some fortitude.

No baseball player can be considered courageous, it is barely a sport. It ranks with Golf in terms of athletic ability necessity to participate.

That said, I watched Kirk Gibson back in 1988 and was thrilled (I was a Dodgers fan back then) to see him limping around the bases. After the last strike in 1994 I gave up on baseball altogether and now couldn't care less about it.

exactly!! I was thinking that too, but thought that maybe I was remembering it wrong.. they could have also mentioned that players had to help him up or they could have mentioned that it was for a first round bye and homefield advantage and that they went on to win the Super Bowl or they could have mentioned that it was the only time that John Madden has gone down to a locker room to shake a player's hand and that he said it was the most courageous performance he'd ever seen or that Emmitt won the rushing title that day or how many times he also caught the ball that day.. and on and on..

How Brett Favre is winning this poll is beyond me. He's leading players playing well with broken bones and seperated shoulders.

I wonder how many times Madden has voted in this poll? :lmao2:

How about Jerry Rice playing with a seperated shoulder in the Superbowl against the Chargers? I also remember Jack Youngblood playing with a broken leg. That is a hard vote. Walter Payton with the flu against the Vikings. Emmitt played his heart out, I cant give him enough credit. I will sit this vote out.

The 49ers blew out the Chargers, so I don't think his shoulder meant that much.

not only that, but a RB playing with a separated shoulder is MUCH different than a wide reciever playing with one..
