We knew after the draft not to expect much from this class this year so besides ST, I don't know how much time they would have gotten in the game. The two that have looked the best are Bueller and Butler, at least for now they haven't been injured.

I'm positive on J Phillips at TE as well.

I think that as a 3rd TE he'll stick around for a long time (by NFL standards, at least), plus he's going to be cheap for us for at least several years.

I like J Williams, too. I think he's starting quality material 1-2 years down the line. At least his injury will only keep him out 4-6 weeks.

These injuries are crazy, this rookie class seems cursed, especially with the collapse of the bubble leading up into all this.

Wow I didn't even realize the thread title was referencing Alan Ball. I thought Jason Williams had a "Ball concussion" sounds painful.

our draft class was all day 2 guys so expecting them to be miracle workers was always a long shot. best rookie may very well be ogletree.

but many of these other guys will have long nfl careers and spending a year learning isn't the end of the world.

at the same time this is a talented team who could really use some dang depth so IR'ing some rookies to make spots for late-cut vets makes a ton of sense imho.

i'd gladly cut pat watkins to bring back keith davis for his special team prowess.

i'd definitely sign a vet CB and especially a vet OLB. the depth there is so sad i almost miss greg ellis.

high ankle sprain. The guy will be hobbled for the rest of the year. Better off if he broke it.

In Wade's postgame conference he said the reason the secondary was forced to play w/o subs or dime for 3rd down once they lost Hamlin & Ball is because they simply ran out of people in the 2nd half.
I hope we can get someone in after the 1st game.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Wade was asked about IR-ing Hamlin (I think Hamlin) and he kinda said he wasn't interesting in doing that sort of thing for guys that could come back and help the team during the season. Said Hamlin was doing good on special teams (who knew?) so I guess he's not in the mood to IR him.

Hodge will practice this week.

So between Hamlin and Williams we will have two of the 53 tied up with players who can't play for at least the first six weeks of the season?

It doesn't stop there though. We have McGee, who will be out a while. Hodge's knee sounds chronic. For at least a few weeks, that makes it swell to four, which is half the alloted "inactive" players for each game.

Fine for now, I guess, but once any other injuries hit, what then?

Can a player be carried on the active roster and then placed on I.R. for an injury that occurred in preseason? I guess they can, so this sounds like dice rolling perhaps. My guess is that this isn't the end of it.

They ran out of people because you don't want to put your starters back into the game that late in a preseason game, especially after they've been standing around for an hour.

SO, will our entire 2009 draft class land on IR? Well, except for Buehler.

Our Special Teams looks like it's going to suck again. Great. Beeler better have a 90% touchback rate or it's going to be just like last year.

The coverage units have been good all preseason against punts and kicks, except for two returns. And thats with all sorts of different combinations running around out there.

Crayton and Newman looked great returning punts the other night. We have good kickoff return guys. We have a great punter and placekicker, and a potentially very good kickoff man.

We've kicked off deep 11 times. Our opponents' average starting line is their 23.4, which would have ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season by more than a yard. Buehler has reached the end zone seven times -- or 63.6 percent, which easily would have ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season. He's had three touchbacks -- or 27.2 percent, which would have ranked No. 4 last season. (One more touchback would put him at No. 1.) And our opponents have started inside their own 20 three times -- or 27.2 percent, which also would have ranked No. 1 last season.

In other words, if our kickoff team performs during the season the exact same way it has in the preseason, we should have the best kickoff team in the NFL.

I bet Hodge,Williams and Hamlin had something to do with that.

Hodge and Williams have barely played

and when they did, they had a combined 1 tackle

Hodge has hardly played, so he's had nothing to do with it.

Saw D Smith make a decent play or two on coverage units. Havent seen Hamlin do much however.

yep, he's missed 2 preseason games

Brandon Williams has missed 2 games too, and was in for only about a half in the one game he did play in
