Wade Phillips 34 Defense

In first 2 games we saw them fill the running lanes and bring some pressure (not many sacks) on the QB. In the 3rd game, whatever we tried sure didn't work. Was that because the whole team was flat or did his system simply not work? Don't care about Minny game cause we obviously didn't intend to do much more then what backups capable of doing in vanilla offense/defense.

So I guess my big question is will we really see Wade's 34 defense in action and how well will it perform particularly with injury problems at both linebacker & CB? I do know that Giant fans are looking forward to playing us with only 7 linebackers & so many DBs. They feel they'll pass on us as much as they went and wear us out with Jacobs running.

I'm taking the optimistic approach that Wade didn't show much of anything on defense & that we even dialed down our offense so as not to expose our use of TO, etc. I mean in all the OTAs & team practices no body could handle Ware. Yet in preseason games he wasn't as big a factor as we hoped nor did Spears, Canty do a lot-- although Bradie James & Burnett certainly did.

If Wade's gonna run this defense like he did San Diego's... in the preseason, we did a fraction of what we'll actually do in the real games.

We ran very few stunts and very few blitzes in preseason. Denver complained that we blitzed a lot... but the only blitzes we ran were ILB blitzes.. probably just getting a look at which ILB's were better at it than others.

We didn't run any stunts or blitzes to assist Ware or any of the OLB's for that matter. We ran just a few DLine stunts in each game (like 3 or 4 tops).

Defensively, the most important thing to gather from the preseason is that:
  • We got good, consistent pushes with our DLine to collapse the pocket. Last year we got NO push with the DLine and the OLB's were on their own to contain and sack the QB. It was not like that this season.
  • Opposing QB's rarely had more than 3 seconds to throw the ball. Rarely did Schaub take more than a 3 step drop in our game with the Texans... we were getting pressure.. they were just running 3 step drops and he was decisive and quick with his throws so we didn't get there in time.
  • We stopped the run pretty well like we did last season. We just missed some tackles.. which hopefully will not be an issue once the real games are going.
Offensively, it looked like they had set plays that they wanted to see in action. Game 1 the TE's were targeted. Game 2 the RB's were targetted. Game 3 it appeared the WR's were targeted.

The only concern I have offensively is how poorly we ran the football against the Texans.

I would like to believe that we saw very little to nothing of what the true scheme is gunna look like. I saw a lot of pressure, but not as much as I had expected. Maybe my expectations were too high, very real possiblity. But I do expect pple to sit back after the first game and and say, man that was an attacking, ferocious defense. Talking about this blitz or that blitz. The constant pressure causing 4 picks or whatever.

But I dont think we have seen whats in store for the fan, the opposing O coordinators or the QB/WR/RB carrying the ball just yet.

My fear is the O. I truely dont know what to expect realistically from Romo and that Oline. I know what I would like to see. But what we get may be different from expectations. We should be better then decent on O and stout as hell on D and McBriar is McBriar and the return game/special teams overall. cant be worse then it has been (which is average I guess).

The Defense should take us places and allow for an offense that does not need to score 31 points a game to win. 17 points should win most games with our D. Health and mental mistakes could kill us. But the D should be good enough to win the division and make a deep run into the playoffs, if all goes well with the O, health and mental mistakes.

The only problem I had with the defense is, we have to come up and jam the receivers more or do something to take away those quick drops.

It seems that all 4 teams were taking quick drops and getting the ball out quickly. So if they're going to do that, then we need to counter that and come up and disrupt the receivers from getting into their routes until our blitz gets there.

Dallas didn't show their hand trust me... Their defensive package will include much more exotic blitzes and line stunts.

This is why there's no way we should trade Spears right now. Lets judge him based on when we have our full defensive scheme in place...not when we running what we did in preseason.

IMO, Spears is going to be a beast this year.

I caught barely any of the preseason games, so Tek, could you answer this question, was Ware moved from left to right often? because that's what Wade's plan for him is this year

Well... it just can't be explained much better than that.

Wether or not we were vanilla or not during preseason, the lineman should have been able to get pressure just by going after the qb...which we didn't do.

I don't know if they are not playing hard enough, or if they just suck. I don't totally think it is the latter, but either way it is pissing me off.

I dont know how many times I was like, man, just 1 step away. We got pressure all over the place in the first two games. I dont know how many time Ware got to the QB just after the ball left his hand.

We are gonna have to bring a lot of pressure against them.

Wade has had terrible pass defenses over the last several years.

I expect the same this year.

Thank goodness our Offense is playing so well.

Giants are too reliant on Shockey - we have to take that away and make Eli beat us.

IMO after the Denver game when the team found out the extent of Newman's injury their preseason focus changed. They decided to put all the corners 1 on 1 on an island and see what they could do. By limiting the amount of pressure on the QB the team was better able to evaluate the CBs abilities in coverage. The "real" difference come sunday will be that
1-there will be much more pressure reducing the amount of time in coverage
and
2-if reeves can't cut it in single coverage he will have safety help

Frankly-I'm not very optimistic if Wade even has the personnel for his 3-4 schemes.

If anything, alot of the personnel was from Bill P-who's talent largely surrounded guys who were run stuffers, and NOT pass rushers(it seems like only Ware, Ellis-who's out, and maybe Ratliffe are our only true pass rushers). SD and Buffalo, OTOH had like 4-5 rushers.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong.
