Patrick Crayton-WR- Cowboys Jun. 1 - 1:18 pm et

Coach Wade Phillips says Patrick Crayton is very much in position to be the Cowboys' starting receiver opposite Roy Williams.

Miles Austin is a favorite of owner Jerry Jones, but Crayton is currently running with the first team. Phillips called Crayton "a top-notch receiver." "I wouldn’t count Patrick Crayton out of anything," Phillips added. "He has a knack for making plays and does run well after catching the ball."

He played #2 before Roy got here and did just fine.

I still think it will be Miles or possibly a late acquisition.

But Crayton is capable.

Where does it say he is the favorite? It just says he's not to be counted out of the running.

well i dont want wade giving crayton the position without a fight from miles austin

i still remember crayton dropping that critical ball in playoff loss to the giants, and if he didnt hestitate at last second, he would have caught a TD from romo in that loss

just look at last year, crayton dropped some serious balls for first downs

and crayton has a big mouth and he doesnt back it up

kinda like if your going to do the talk, youve got to do the walk
crayton runs his mouth, but doesnt do the walk to back it up come crunch time

He is capable. The only other thing we need from him is being consistent in catching the ball and making plays. I didn't see that from him enough last year. :)

i was paraphrasing, but to me it looks like wade is nominating the position to crayton already, there should be open competition, what wade should have said to me is this
we have 2 very capable wrs for the number 2 position, crayton and austin, looks like a big dog fight to see which one comes out on top

to me, wade isnt a very capable coach person that can use the media to his advantage like john madden would do or jimmy johnson;

I like Crayton and I think he can do well as rthe number 2. He is tough as nails, does have good hands and plays with a chip on his shoulder. I know he runs his gums at the wrong times a little too often but the kid has some skills. I am looking forward to seeing him step up and play like he did a few seasons ago.

Crayton is the best route runner we have. I'd prefer the he was in the slot though.

Wade did not at all say he was the #2, BTW.

right, thats exactly my point, he said he is very capable, come on now
big playoff game to the giants, crayton dropped a big pass from romo where he was wide open ready to run for big yardage, then alittle later,

crayton hestitated, that split hestitation, cost a touchdown catch from romo that would maybe won the game, but crayton goofed

then last year, crayton dropped some more passes for first downs;

you call that capable?

With all the craziness last year, Crayton still pulled down 39 catches for 550 yards last year.

He actually put up several 80 yard games, which is great for a 2nd WR if he could do it with more consistency.

I think Romo and Crayton have good chemistry.

I'd like it to be Austin, and still think it will be, because Crayton is better in a 3rd WR role (probably one of the best 3rd WRs in the game) and I'd like Austin to be a field stretcher.

Have to disagree joe. We'll see how it plays out after camp and preseason games. They usually distinquish themselves by then.

That is just Phillips' style.

He's not going to put anyone down by saying it is an "open competition". That might upset somebody and give them a complex. It is much better to simply talk about how he is "top notch".

And it's rather obnoxious that fans are still holding that one drop against the Giants against him. Yeah, it sucked big time. But at some point you have to quit holding it against the guy and letting it cloud your evaluation of the player and what he brings to the table.

Jordan missed some shots too. And Jackie Smith was a damn good TE.

That is correct. He catches way too much grief for that game. I don't see what else you could have wanted for a 7th round converted QB. He's been more than we should have ever expected already.

If Austin doesn't beat out Crayton, then we'll know he's just a jag, and nothing more.

Crayton sucks. I wish we'd just cut him. He's on the same level as Ellis and Pacman to me. I don't like any of these TO aftershock people.

Yep. This is just from the PC last week where someone said all the talk this offseason had been about Roy and Miles -- what about Crayton? And Wade just said not to count Patrick out of anything.

But he also said they thought Miles was at a point where he was ready to step forward.

Then you probably have an issue with many more players.
