Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman has been diagnosed with a sports hernia injury and the team has forwarded results of his medical tests to a Philadelphia specialist for confirmation before determining whether surgery is necessary, according to a source close to the player.

A Cowboys source said Newman would have the surgery immediately if the sports hernia injury is confirmed and would be out a minimum of six weeks. Newman will miss his third game of the season Sunday when the Cowboys play the Arizona Cardinals.
At the request of Newman and his agent, the Cowboys have sent the player's MRI results and other information to Dr. William Meyers, who performed surgery on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb to repair a sports hernia injury. NBA player Grant Hill, whose father Calvin works for the Cowboys, is another professional athlete Meyers has treated for the injury.
Newman played against the Green Bay Packers and Washington Commanders with some discomfort and then suffered more intense pain in the team's practice last Friday, when he was listed on the injury report and unable to play against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"It had been painful, but it wasn't something in those first two games where I felt I was really hurting myself,'' Newman said Wednesday in a phone conversation. "It was kind of a dull pain, not something that affected me a whole lot. But last week, it really hurt and I couldn't open up and run and that's why I didn't play.''
Newman said he might have suffered the sports hernia while attempting to prepare to play in the team's season opener against the Cleveland Browns after missing most of training camp and all of the preseason after pulling a groin muscle on July 28.
Newman declined to mention the injury when he claimed responsibility for a poor performance against the Commanders. In the Cowboys' only defeat this season, Newman gave up touchdown catches to James Thrash and Antwaan Randle El and a 53-yard pass to Santana Moss on consecutive series in the second quarter of a 26-24 loss.
"I was frustrated early in the game in the first half," Newman said. "I couldn't get anything going for a while. I settled down and kept pushing and guys just kept encouraging me. I felt better in the second half, way better than in the first."

Surgery may be the better option. I had this injury some years ago (oddly enough right after I pulled my groin) and the Dr. said you've got two options.

1) Surgery
2) Rest

Well, I knew that the school wasn't going to pay for the surgery and there was no way I could afford it on my own. There were only 4 or 5 weeks left to play in the season so before every practice, I would wash down 4 or 5 Advil and just try to fight through it.

I tore mine in Oct and I wasn't fully healed until the next Feb. Its difficult to rest it because you use your abs in so much you do during the day...or night.

Wost injury I've ever had. Its extremely painful. It hurts to breath, cough and it hurts like hell to even laugh.

Even if he toughs it out he won't be 100% for the rest of the season. With surgery there is a good chance he will be.

A sports hernia? Following surgery, 8 weeks of rehab usually, and you're back to regular activity. Not a huge deal in the long term (at least compared to ACL, achilles, etc.)

I think the success rate is between 80-90%. Not a pleasant injury, for sure though.

Never wanted topay him that kind of money but didn't want to let him go either. He's too fragile. Might as well get ready for a couple years of him not playing consistently. Career isn't over but he'll never amount to this new contract either. Now I'm sick.

I agree.
I had a bad feeling about him getting paid like that also but the team seems so close I didnt want him to go either ...he has been hurt lots last few years and very fragile and not as young as you would think for a rookie contract just ending

Where does this come from. I think last year when he missed 3 games was the only time he has ever been hurt? Where does lots last few years come from? Just curious?

From yahoo sports:

Season Team Games
2003 Dallas 16
2004 Dallas 16
2005 Dallas 16
2006 Dallas 16
2007 Dallas 13
2008 Dallas 3

I had this injury from golf - abdominal strain granted no surgery. It haunted me for years and a PAINFULL injury you can't play through.....

To this day I still get that twinge of pain ocassionally and I'll walk off the course. Not to be messed with.

Terrible news

5 years from now, we'll all be saying how Newman had a good career in Dallas, but it could have been a HECK of ALOT better.

Isn't that why we drafted Mike Jenkins then?

For all you DeSean Jackson lovers out there...YOU CAN BREATH A SIGH OF RELIEF NOW!

Cowboy Junkie, what I am asking is, besides last year what other time has he missed? I have watched every single game since he has been in Dallas and the only time I can ever remember him not playing prior to this year were the three last year?

It seems like every year, no matter how healthy teams are, they'll have at least a guy or 2 on IR.

Remember last year, Fergy got hurt in wk1. The year before, Ellis went down in the 2nd half of the season. The year before that, Flo went down.

All I can say is injuries are a part of the game. It SUCKS that Newman has to miss significant time, but remember last year, we made it through just fine without our big 3-4 run stuffer Fergy.

Like I said, we drafted Jenkins, and hopefully, this Pacman incident was much ado about nothing(as his bodyguard seemingly was going after his girlfriend).

Oh well....injuries happen.....

Thats how the ball bounces in this league.....

Now other players need to step up.

Im sad to see Newman go thru this......looks like he pushed himself too much to play at the start of the season.

And we wonder why Wade is easy on the guys in training camp.....

I question our medical staff in some ways.....but in the end...its up to the player to call himself fit to play........Newman did.....and now we suffer that decision.

Hopefully its a quick recovery.....maybe by playoff time he will be ready but I dont think we will see a healthy Newman till next training camp.

Now lets hope Pacman isnt suspended and our two rookies CB's make some improvement.
