Don't see how this demonstrated football smarts. Answer was very obvious and predictable. In fact, it showed they had the same perception that moved him to the 4th round. Thought he may struggle to adapt to typical NFL system, potentially a shot-gun only passer and a good runner. That was the book on him coming out of college and pushed him to round 4.

You're using 20/20 vision after the fact.

Amazes me the lengths people will go and logic they will use to not give the coach of the year and HOF owner any credit whatsoever for drafting Dak. Don't hurt yourselves guys.
All that matters is we were the smart team that actually turned in the card on Prescott. Doesn't matter what round, conditional pick or not! Nobody else did. We did! By luck, dumb luck, or other, it was Jerry, Jason, Will, and the scouting dept that said yes.

I'll let y'all spin it to whatever helps ya sleep at night!

Despite what some think Jerry and Garrett aren't "football dumb"

for me, this has never been the issue, its how well does jeri stack up against the people he has to compete against and I'll always believe he's woefully inferior, ymmv

It does show it wasn't a random pick, and likely explains his early success. There were whole segments of our existing playbook that were exactly what he run in college.

Smart works until something negative happens.

The luck part is pretty big and that is not the worst thing in the world, but you would like better.

Solid discussion, further proof that Jerry is no longer 100% in charge and does want the input of people around him.
Which is just a part of age.

The smartest thing they did was put themselves back in the game by actually picking a QB again. With the way they have been drafting lately that gives them a better shot than most at striking gold, although the odds are certainly still stacked against it. I hope they continue to pick mid to late round QBs every other year or so. You can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket.

Isn't the draft a crap shoot. Look at Washington for example they gambled on RG ouch my knee and gave a kings ransom for a very athletic qb that could barely read the Sunday funnies let alone an NFL defense but also spent a 4th on a guy they have franchised twice.

True. For instance, smart was taking Troy in 89. Negative happened shortly after. In the end, we remained smart, and stuck it out with Troy.

The draft may be a "crap shoot" but where teams fail is that they don't use it appropriately.

Whether it be for some home run swing on an overrated QB prospect or a reach for a need area that is supposed to put your team over the top, it is not an easy process.

Many teams go through not only roster turnover in three years, but also coaches and GMs.

I can appreciate the patience we appear to be showing. But eventually, it has to pay off.

Just hard to discern what the tipping point would be.

Free Agency, Alex! Free agency can be the vehicle that tips us in the path to the big show. When used with restraint, like we've been doing, we can go out next offseason and grab that one difference maker and maybe another mid-tier guy after seeing how this class looks, as well as last year's class after another year in the league.

If we're close, FA is extremely viable.

Really?

Just checking because the last few years we have had little cap space, the message was, no, free agency is the debil, Bobby Boucher.

So if we have some room now, it suddenly becomes a viable resource?

Well, we have the space now, so yes. :) And it's all about the team, way more than "the space." In years past, FA was just a futile attempt at contending because we had too many holes.

And in any event, even if we didn't "have the space" but we were close, we could just restructure to get our guys we see as fits and upgrades to get us over the hump. Being close to having a team contending for the Big Dance is my only caveat.

Free agency is real, a competitive advantage when used properly, and extremely viable when contending. Truly contending. That's why I say it's good that we see where we are this year before pulling the trigger.

I'd love for us to go after a Chancellor type, say if Jaylon looks good. Or an end, CB (Sherman), etc.

Typical Jason Garrett mumbo jumbo. Lucky that Jerry is so senile, and like the rest of us, couldn't possibly understand what a turd like Garrett was trying to not say, and took a wild, unadvised, gamble on a 4th rd QB. God bless good luck. The Cowboys needed a break.
