Ware contract update

Last week's negotiating session between agent Pat Dye Jr. and Dallas Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones nudged the two sides closer to an eventual contract extension for linebacker DeMarcus Ware, the NFL's sacks leader in 2008. In this case, however, "closer" is a relative term; a deal is hardly imminent. The two sides, who hadn't spoken substantively in three months, haven't even agreed yet on the length of the proposed extension. And despite last week's progress, a pretty wide financial gap remains. With the recent extensions of quarterbacks Eli Manning and Philip Rivers, the representatives for Ware gained critical information for the purpose of defining their expectations. But the Cowboys would like to use as a template the recent contracts of Albert Haynesworth, Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen and Terrell Suggs, which essentially are each worth about $12 million per year. Ware would prefer to use the contract of Nnamdi Asomugha (valued at about $14.3 million annually) as a "comparable," but Dallas officials seem to view the pricey extension of the Oakland cornerback as an aberration, and irrelevant to their negotiations. The upshot is that, while there was some movement last week, the progress wasn't enough yet to lead to a new contract anytime soon.

btw: I ordered it but ESPN never delivered magazine

Ware shouldn't settle for anything less than 100M and 40 guaranteed.

They already know how much he is going to get paid. Now they are figuring out how many years and how much per year.

Ware and Osi are like brothers and have always said they intend to play together in the NFL.

a) Would Ware take less to allow Jerry to go and bring Osi to Dallas when he is a free agent?

b) can the Cowboys or Giants afford 20-25 million just for 2 DE?

ok this is what you need to do, since we have about 10,500 left in salary cap money

Obviously the cowboys want to save about 4 million for emergency and roll some of that into next year,

Then you want to figure out after subtracting 4 from 10,500,000 or so, how much that counts against the cap in guaranteed money and his contract that year, so go ask Adam, im sure he could break it down to how much

and how much ware would get pretty close to guaranteed money and salary that year each yr

so ask adam, our cap guru

Come on, you should know better. This isn't about any fear of making less money or Jerry giving up more of his. There's a salary cap. Jerry profit is pretty much locked in provided the CBA is extended.

This is all about cap dollars. There are only so many to go around. Every dollar we spend on Ware is a dollar we can spend on another player to fill out our 53 man roster in 2010 to perhaps out to 2016.

I've said this before and it's sad but Ware's "value" to the Cowboys will never be higher than it was in 2008 when he probably counted against the cap only 2-4 mil.

The second he signs this new deal that value drops. That's because the true value of a player isn't just measured by his performance. It's a function of both performance and the % of cap dollars he costs.

It's so easy to look at his talent and what he means to the Cowboys and say, dam just sign the guy. Jerry needs to get the best deal he can for the team and for us the fans.

As much as the mega deals tend to have the look of something that will hurt a team with respect to the cap - I've noticed over the years that they tend to pay off. Provided the player plays up to level he was signed to. The revenues and corresponding cap has consistently increased over time faster than past estimates.

Problem with this deal, is the economic environment we're in now and may experience for some time. I just don't see how the growth in revenues over the next 2,4,6 years can approach what the NFL has consistently experienced in the past.

I'm no expert, (maybe Adam can step in here) but I think the NFL's cap has been doubling about ever 7-9 years for some time now.
I really don't think Jerry is counting on that over the next 10 years and it's a significant factor in these negotiation with Ware.
