It was a joke.

You have to admit it's a little funny that you were discussing Ware and quoted the combined sack stats for Ware + Hatcher when Ware only had 6 of the 18.

Hatcher had 11, right? So Ware and Hatcher only combined for 17 sacks, not 18.

Hatcher and Selvie combined for 18 sacks.

If Ware comes back for less, Spencer gives a discount cause he robbed jerry last year and hatch signs a friendly deal. Is this the making of a a good DL?[/quote
Who knows? The Messed up part is that JJ doesnt have a clue either. Hence the problem with this franchise. I love my Cowboys, and will die bleeding blue, but these are dark times...

Is it really smart to write off Ware? Like Ware, John Abraham had a bad year at the age of 31 with only 5.5 sacks. He has racked up 44 in 4 seasons since then. Osi had 7.5 last year at 32. Maybe eventually reduce Ware's PT to the point he's no longer an every-down guy but only comes in on passing downs. Make him into a rotational guy/pass-rush specialist to conserve his energy and body and keep him fresh. He plays less but becomes more efficient when he does play.

My guess is the line will be:

RDE: Ware, Rookie
DT: Bass, Rookie
DT: Hayden, Vet FA
DE: Crawford, Selvie

Gone will be: Hatcher, Spencer, Wynn, Brown, Jones, Irvin, Kearse, Wilson & Rayford.

This is pretty much what we had going into last season. Cut off the old fat.

Exactly
Ware- might be done
Spencer- microfracture surgury is bad news no thanks
Crawford- unproven to say the least
Hatcher- has career year in contract year at 32. Will not be worth what he will cost

I think you go ahead and let them all go and start over.

These guys are the old guard and there isn't a lot of gas left in the tank with any of them.

We need younger guns….guys that can learn the schemes,..play more than 40 snaps a game and more than 8-10 games a season.

..grow together and then as the cap issues go away in the next couple of years..

more can be dome.

To try to keep the old core of Ware, Hatcher and Spencer to play the 4-3 and not the 3-4..

is insane if you ask me.

Selvie I thought performed well at times, but he seemed to run out of gas as the season wore on.

Same thing with Hatcher.

Started good and talked a good game..

but he was not a difference maker.

As long as Bass and Hayden are the backups in the scenario, that would be okay. Those two would pair to form the worst starting DT tandem in the league.

the chances of Hatcher and Spencer returning are slim to none.

The issue is cost. I think everyone would like to keep Ware on the team for the right price; however, his salary is 12.25M and if they keep him without a pay cut, they'll have to restructure his contract which will push about 11M into the future in terms of the salary cap. His 2015 salary is over 13M.

I guess I see the John Abraham situation from the other viewpoint. The Cardinals were able to sign him for 2-years at a total cost of 4.6M. The Seahawks also signed two free agent DL for less than Ware's salary and they combined for 16.5 sacks while not even starting. What could a smart team do in 2014 with 12.25M in free agency?

On the flip side, I wouldn't advise Ware to take a pay cut if I were his agent. He really can't know his value without being a free agent. They could cut him, let him test the market and re-sign him if the price is right.

I think Ware's agent will have a good idea of what the league interest is for a new contract. Even when the teams cant make formal offers, there is plenty of wink and nod conversations about teams being interested "if the player became available, hypothetically, yatta yatta".

IMO its like the Doug Free situation last year. The team can likely get Ware to restructure down because both sides know cutting him is better than his current contract. But the Cowboys know how big the cap hit is for cutting him and Ware's agent knows the team would rather pay that amount and have him than paying the same amount after cutting him. Who knows how the whole thing plays out, but I think Ware takes a big pay cut to stay on the team but has incentives added back into the deal.

A full restructure would push $8.54625M in new pro-rated bonus money into 2015 and beyond.

And it would see Ware's 2015 cap number bloat to $20.3525M (4yrs) or $19.78275M (5yrs) depending on whether the '14 restructure was done over four or five years.

If this happens, Dallas will be in the same position next year of needing to address Ware's contract.

It's a very tough thing for any player to take a pay cut, let alone a big one, and go back in his locker room.

Many would rather take less money elsewhere than go through such an experience.

Ware's agent can most certainly put out feelers and gauge what kind of money his client could anticipate on the open market.

Ware has a wife and young kids, does he want to uproot them at this point in his career or be away from them for an extended period if he goes by himself?

Or would he rather take a pay cut the next two seasons and finish his career with the Cowboys?

I appreciate the OP's post and the urging to keep Ware for less.

But this is what is wrong with the Cowboys franchise and fanbase.

What in the world do we want to the journeymen Hatcher (aged) and an injured and recalcitrant and possibly passive aggressive Spencer? Spencer has had ONE good season with us. That's it. Then a seasonlong injury.

Never half I seen such devotion to keeping aging, injured players at the expense of the overall team.

I am no fan of Billichek but that coach and his front office know how to waive the aged and sick and talent-challenged and know how to reload. That is what we need, not a perpetual home for players playing their last few years or experiments that are in the 3rd year.

Waive, unload, trade whatever. Just get these 2nd-tier players out of here. As a fan, I deserve better and you should too.
