Darren Woodson was the heart and soul of our defense... he would be turning in his locker if he seen what Roy Williams did in the Commanders game...

Woodson, is good at not letting nobody getting behind him in coverage...

Darren Woodson was the Quarterback of our defense. So yeah, he was all that. Some people say Woodson was on the decline in his last few years, which I disagree with, but that aside he brought much more to the team than his play on the field.

Darren Woodson was a very under rated player. He was really a linebacker that was fast enough to play Strong Safety. He had great technique and was incredibly intelligent. I know his stats will never get him oin the Hall, but he will be in the Ring of Honor someday, he was that good.

Yes, Woody was all that. His skills started to diminish, but he still made plays. He was a good presence for the defense and a sure tackler coming up in run support. He also had good instincts for the ball in run support. Still not a ball hawk free safety, but this is a guy that would line up one on one with wide receivers. He knew how to cover guys. His leadership was the most important aspect of his game.

He was the heart and soul of the defense. Every player on that unit looked to him for direction. No one has stepped up since he left to stake claim to that role. His importance cannot be understated.

The defense in 2002 was so reliable, its like you had total confidence that they would stop opponents and they did.hence 10-6.

I think you're confusing 2002 with 2003.

Most people don't remember but Woody had legit 4.4 speed coming out of college. His ability to play Safety and then come up and be basically the nickle corner is something the Cowboys truly miss.

Heck if Woody of old was playing Sunday BP probably wouldn't mind staying in the nickle defense when teams would go to 3-wide. Instead of stubbornly staying in the base 3-4.

His versatility is missed right now.

Exactly right. You could put him on a slot receiver and not have to worry about coverage. Not too many safeties could do that.

I dont like the 3-4.BP should have got a vet safety and stuck with the nickel.

I have never seen one man mean so much to an offense or defense like Woody.I mean if u took t.o. away the eagles would still be very good.its almost comparable to losing a top basketball player, maybe not jordan but damn.it just really suprises me,how good he was.

You will rarely find a cowboy fan say a bad thing about Woodson before his injury, if that tells you how good he is as cowboys fans tend to be very critical of players.

The guy was respected by the fans, players and coaches.

I would not go this far but yeah, Woodson was a very important piece of the puzzle. Having said that, I think our Defense has been on the decline since before Woody left. I think we had one real good defensive year but the years before were just OK and the years after have not been anything to hang your hat on either.

It may be a problem of the new era, but the Cowboys don't seem to do well at having players ready to step in when cornerstones like Woodson go down. I certainly was worried a year before he had to quit. Back injuries are bad too. And just wishing real hard won't make things work. Replacing Emmitt, replacing Aikman, even Novacek, and so on, no one around to step up. And it was not like these things weren't obvious. Perhaps it was just the personnel miscues, but....

Now they had Roy to step in for Mr. Woodson, but that left the free safety position a gaping void.

What's that song about not knowing what you got til its gone? If we had a free safety with half the stuff of Darren Woodson.....
