Was it ever official that Tyler Smith would play LT? Who protects Dak's blind side?

To make any kind of intelligent comment on the question of whether Tyler Smith should be moved to LT, you’d have to be a coach who spends time with him day in and day to know whether he’s capable of of handling the position. The player, for example, needs to be completely bought in is a major factor.
Yes, if you're not all that intelligent and spend your days harrassing and attacking others, you wouldn't have any idea, I agree.

I gave up on this honestly.

While he's currently the best tackle on the team, I conceded that a free agent LT better than Chuma Edoga is the best answer to solve this huge hole.

It's not worth arguing or explaining to several here how poor Guyton is when they have their blinders on about his traits that dont translate to the playing field.

It's almost a no win with as poor as the defense is and the priority resources needed to fill defensive needs first.

So Im just hoping to get lucky on a non scrub moderately priced left tackle.

I know, like those grow on trees.

Last I read, he was going into a Coach’s meeting to voice his dissatisfaction with the position. To me, OT is that big elephant in the room. You can’t survive a season with a bad one. But the team really needs those high draft picks to fix the defense, and has already spent too many in recent years on the line, Now reports come out that Guyton doesn’t have the heart for football?? I see the Chiefs released Jawaan Taylor but I don’t think he’s any better than Steele who has been up and down since his injury. It makes a lot of sense with Bass and Hoffman at depth, to move Tyler outside unless there is some type of free agency solution. Far too many holes on the D, but having a hole at LT will cripple (literally) Dak.
Schotty was asked directly about whether that move was about the circumstances at the time or if it could be a move of the future and IIRC he kinda just said that they still like Guyton.

His offensive coordinator has said he'd prefer to keep him at guard because having him, Beebe and Booker on the inside is a valuable strength for the team.

No one, this FO is always 10 steps behind for the past 30 plus yrs. Crownover would be my choice with a trade down.

Guyton is an OK tackle and a stud guard. Given that he's earning tackle money either way, he'd prefer to stay in the position that gives him the best chance to succeed.

People will give him crap over "not being a team player" and playing tackle, but the NFL doesn't reward team players. Baker Mayfield played a full contract season hurt while with the Browns, and his game suffered for it. His reward was the team deciding that "he wasn't the guy" and dumping him to be a backup in Carolina.

Loyalty is a two-way street or it's nothing, and NFL teams aren't very loyal.

I dont think he would be sup par. He has the skill set to be a Pro Bowl caliber LT. He has the feet and slide to mirror top rushers. He had a strong run in the three games he started. Much better than when he was a rookie.

It would be smart for him, because he could make alot more money setting the market at LT than he could at LG. If he can get a couple Pro Bowls(which I think he could), he would get a top 5 OT contract at 27 years old.

Its moot anyways, because he himself doesnt agree with me. And thats what matters really
Yeah Pro Bowl if he is about the fourth alternate MAYBE

have not seen evidence that Guyton is a stud anything

Is he? We're not even sure Smith can play tackle.

Schotty said flat out "he's a guard" but also said things could always change if it means getting the best five linemen out on the field.

As has been discussed here before, moving Smith to LT full-time opens a can of worms given that he would go from the highest paid guard in the league to an under-paid left tackle.
Only on CZ is the 6th highest paid OT “underpaid”

This is a stupid FO prioritizing player over team

Let’s see. Guyton improved in his second season, but lost time with injuries. Steele was good in run blocking but struggled at times in pass protection. Thomas, who had never played in an NFL game struggled. Yet Cowboys finished second in the NFL in total offense and passing offense.

Guyton will hit year 3. Steele will be just as good, possibly better. Thomas will improve in his second season on the field. This will be only the second season under Schotty as coach and playcaller and second season for Adams as OC and run game coordinator. It will be Javontae Williams second full season fully recovered fromm injury and, along with Pickens, his second year in the offense.

We are not changing any personnel. Your starting OL is Guyton—Smith—Beebe—Booker—Steele, with Thomas as the Swing tackle and Hoffman as the main interior backup. This is no time to call for changes when the offense is elite and should be improved and more consistent. You can’t have pro bowlers at every position.

As long as the interior OL is solid, Dak and Javontae can navigate the occasional disruption outside.

Reports are the cowboys are NOT going to cut Steele.

That means the plan for now is Steele to start at RT and give Guyton another year to try and develop at LT.

Let’s hope Guyton improves. He still has a long way to go. That said it isn’t all bad. He has improved some since he was drafted.

Yep, this is definitely the best attitude to have until that occasional disruption becomes constant disruption.

Then, something will need to be done

Hopefully, that constant disruption happens much later in the season than sooner.

Or maybe it would be best to have those type of problems identified as soon as possible to possibly address the personnel deficiency to handle the full season ahead.

Guyton? Did you mean Tyler?

Agreed.

I think Tyler and Schotty know his strengths and weaknesses. Hes a penalty waiting to happen at LT. He’s an all pro guard. It’s not rocket science. You can see he’s not as confident or as violent at LT as well. His footwork is off, etc.

Would love to spend some money and go after Walker.

Plug him in immediately at LT. Move Guyton to RT and see if he is salvageable there. Cut Steele. That would be my plan on the OL.
