This isn't a thread about getting Payton but more of his time as an OC here. I didn't become a super diehard fan until 07 so I never knew Payton was here until years later. Was Payton anything like Moore? Genius at times but inconsistent at others? or was he solid the whole time he was here? Were folks really upset when he became the NO coach or were most folks nonchalant about it?

It's more of a curiosity related to the future of Moore. Based on people who were around during that time, would you say Moore is closer to a potential Payton or closer to another Garrett?

Hard to judge him here as Bill was the puppeteer
But he didn’t have the Tuna in NY. He had his play-calling duties taken away from him there and pushed out the door. But plenty of failed coaches resurrect themselves at another team. Personally, having Drew Brees enabled Payton the latitude of growing and learning.

Frankly I didn’t find him that much more impressive than I did when he was with the Giants and had his play calling privileges stripped but he had some really bad QBs to work with!

Payton was demoted by Fassel and relieved of his play calling duties in NY and Parcells hired him as a passing game specialist because that's what got him demoted in NY, he was pass happy. Parcells had balance on his staff.

Posters need to look a lot closer at Payton's play calling because a lot of that was Brees. On that famous no call PI call, if not for that, they would have been hammering Payton on his questionable calls at the end of that game when all they needed was to eat time and kick a FG.

He did well with what he had. He made the 2005 offense viable with a horrible OL, Bledsoe at QB, and two WR's who at that point in their career where #2's

I had no idea Sean Payton was such a hard azz, I don’t think Kellen Moore has that in him lol
That's the thing.
Payton is a hardass.
Is Kellen?

He looks more like the buddy-buddy type, but I will admit to not knowing the inner-machinations of how he works within the team.

no, he was actually good. he was doing well in NY, with limited talent they had there, but Fassel demoted him because he was on the hot seat. once Parcells got hired, he immediately brought in Payton.....

I think he was a quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. I’m not sure if he was a play caller or not when he was here.

Pretty sure he took over calling plays so Parcells could concentrate on the defense. I might be wrong, have slept since then

Payton before Cowboys gig:

Kellen before Cowboys gig:

  • Nothing

Maybe comparing KM to Payton is the wrong move.....he is more like Jason Garrett. in other words, No way Jose.

Payton had over 10 years of experience as a coach before joining the Cowboys. There was a clown here who was arguing with me that experience doesn't matter when it comes to coaching. I beg to differ. KM's inexperience showed up many times against better DC/defenses this season once they had more tape on his offense.

Another issue I can see is the fact that he was teammates with some of our current players. I wonder if he has the balls to tell Dak not to do something or sit Zeke when he's not performing.
He may be well liked but is he respected as their main offensive coach by the players?

Jesus just because Moore is a “smart guy” doesn’t mean crap. Jason Garret was smart to. This franchise is the worst

Very good point. It’s always the concern, in any business, with promoting someone and putting them in charge of their former peers. Doesn’t mean it can’t work, but it takes a special individual and organizational support. Don’t know about the former with KM, but the later is a problem here.
