Was That the Worst Fake Punt You Ever Saw?

I've seen some pretty bad ones in my football watching career but that one takes the cake. You have a potential HOF QB who has led his team to 2 quick TDs on their last 2 drives and have momentum and that's what they draw up? I think it's pretty obvious when a guy is being set in motion during a punt formation, it will 100% be a fake and the special teams already know it's coming.

And you draw up some sort of read option with the punter about 15 yards behind the line. Lol. It was hilarious.

Sean Payton definitely got way too cute in that situation. You weren't catching Dallas off guard at all.

Was a head scratcher for sure. Like you said they were gaining confidence on offence. I'll take it a step further, it was worse than Icing your own kicker.:omg:

Worst fake punt I've seen, but not the worst special teams trick play. That would be this one:

Did they ever confirm that Dallas only had 10 men on the field on that play?

The Cowboys were in a prevent punt coverage. New Orleans should have burned a timeout when they saw that and trotted Drew Brees back on the field

You have to imagine how discombobulated the Saints' players and staff must have been at that point. They were so unprepared and caught off guard by the beat down they were absorbing, that I'm not surprised we saw a questionable playcall like that.

The one thing they absolutely could not do was burn a time out there. Once they saw the defense, which made it clear their brilliant plan wouldn't work, they had three options.
1. Go ahead and run their stupid fake that couldn't possibly work and would make them look like idiots.
2. Audible out of the fake and punt it away.
3. Eat a delay of game penalty and punt on 4th-and-14.
There were still almost 8 minutes left, and the Cowboys' two previous possessions had each lasted less than 2 minutes. Punting wasn't a good option there, but it was better than anything else they had once they sent those guys on the field.

I can't remember the teams but I recall either fake punt of FG where the guy with the ball wnet to throw it and it actually went backwards

LOL, I think I know exactly what you're referring to. I've seen that on a number of blooper reels. Not sure if that was a designed fake or if it was botched and the kicker was improvising- either way it's pretty funny.

It might have been okay if Dallas had the regular punt return team on the field but they didn't. They basically had the defense on the field in a fake punt prevention formation. They were expecting it so NO should have just punted.

I have to say that was indeed the worst attempted fake I have seen in quite some time.

I would have kept Brees on the field or just punted, we just gave up 2 quick TDs and were reeling.

I think you might be referring to the Garo Yupremian attempt at a pass after the holder bobbled the ball on a FG attempt. I think that's what happened, but not 100% on that. It was a long time ago.

I think we agree that anything was better than running a gadget play with a punter against a defense expecting it.

I haven't seen the replay since last night, but from what i gather they were probably trying to screen to the left side. Cowboys sniffed it out due to obvious punt fake, so the punter pretty much had to eat it.

I am really starting to like the assistant coaches. Been a long time since we made such good in game adjustments.
