This is not a Jaylon Smith discussion.
After Commanders roasting our D today with 0 sacks, it is obvious what we are missing is obvious an edge rusher (or 2).
Some suggested drafting edge rusher at our slot in round 2 of 2016 draft.

Lets analyze where the DEs were picked and how they performed this season.
Other than Spence (character risk), no one else was available at #34 that was highly rated by most scouts.

Here are the DEs picked between Jaylon and Maliek Collins:
1. Noah Spence - character risk - 4 sacks - he was not on their leaked draft board
2. Kamalei Correa - 0 sacks, enough said
3. Jihad Ward - 0 sacks, enough said
4. Carl Nassib - 1.5 sacks, enough said

Here are who was picked between Maliek and Tapper:
1. Ngakoue, Yannick - 5 sacks, but apparently not on their draft board. Furthermore, if they liked him, they could have taken him instead of Maliek. DE was the first priority, not DT given that we were trying to pick Ogbah over Jaylon smith.
2. Shilique Calhoun - 0,5 sacks, enough said.

They choose Tapper over all remaining edge rushers.

And maybe at some point, he will get the chance to prove it in the NFL. I was fine with the selection because the gamble was that you were getting an elite talent..... and I am still fine with it. But its not even a certainty he will ever play.

I thought I read they wanted Ogbah, but he went right before their pick.

Right - that is what I remember, but I dont remember whether we tried to trade up for Obgah and Dodd.
We could not get Obgah, and Obgah has an ok 3 sacks this year.

My point is there was no immediate pass rusher available at #34 though.

You cant fault the Cowboys for not being able to secure a pass rusher in this draft based on where they picked. I guess they could have traded up for Ogbah at the end of the first round, but Im not sure he would have been a difference maker this season anyway and what would have been the cost to do it?

Next season however they have to make this a priority in free agency and the draft.

I dont fault them because there is no point to bring someone in that is the same as what we have already.
I am sure DE will be priority this year - FA and draft.
We probably need more than 1.

Watch us fleece Chicago or JAX for their 1st and 3rd rounder. ;)

I expect 2 DL in the 2nd and 3rd round this year, after we use Chicago's first on Jabril Peppers.

That's why it's a gamble.
