Was this too many flowers for a viewing and a funeral?

I paid about $250 in flowers for a friend's funeral. He was the brother of my ex-boyfriend, but we've all remained extremely close. I'm basically part of their family.

He is being cremated, but his brother told me that they had only ordered flowers to be put over the casket during the viewing. I asked him if they wanted me to pitch in money, but he said to order flowers. So I assumed that they might not have a lot of flowers there and opted for one of those standing flower arrangements.

My mom and a co-worker said they'd like to help out with the flowers, so was that too grandiose of a gesture? I make pretty good money - I don't know why I feel bad about sending a lot of flowers. I'm just wondering if I did the right thing.

I've been fortunate enough to have never really had a funeral to go to (except when I was little), so I'm a little unsure about the politics/etiquette of it all.

...doesn't look out of line to me. I would expect the grieving party to accept your gesture in kind.

I agree with David. The arrangement looks really nice and appropriate.
