Commanders ink safety Stoutmire

The Washington Commanders continued to prepare for the possibility of losing Sean Taylor to a three-year prison sentence by signing Omar Stoutmire yesterday. Stoutmire, 31, is the fourth veteran safety the Commanders have added this offseason, following Pierson Prioleau, Cory Hall (who promptly retired) and Tony Dixon.
Stoutmire missed the final 15 games of 2004 for the New York Giants after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in the opener.
The Fresno State product had started every game for the Giants in 2002 and 2003 after being a backup for the team the previous two seasons. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Stoutmire played his first two seasons for Dallas and his third for the New York Jets.
Taylor, Washington's top pick in the 2004 draft, has said he will report to training camp as scheduled tomorrow after skipping the entire offseason program. However, Taylor faces a Sept.?12 trial in Miami on a felony assault count and a simple battery misdemeanor.
The Commanders cut offensive lineman Ben Nowland to make room for Stoutmire.
