Watching Sam Williams and Fowler pass rushing vs the Giants

You watch that game and for some of Diggs' so called mistakes, it looked like he thought he had over the top help
What help did he think was back there though? If he understands the call he knows where the other defenders are lined up. On one of the last Giant TD in the 4th, he looks around and sees that the safety is only a few yards deeper than him & probably 20 yards away (middle of the field). Yet he stands flat footed & let's the receiver pass him, then looks around and tries to catch up.

The only way the safety would be in position is if he immediately bailed at snap to cover the post. No reason for Diggs to be expecting that. Now you could make the argument that the safety should have been deeper. Seems logical to me but that isn't where he was lined up.

Why wasn't Diggs backpedalling til the receiver declared the route? I mean standing allmost still wasn't ever going to be a correct defensive position.

It feels like Eberflus is hell bent on running his scheme even if it doesn't play to the players strengths.

I guess we can wait and see if that changes as the season continues.

One thing I will say with regards to the secondary is that while I don't think they are uber talented, it's hard for me to pinpoint who sucks and who doesn't. You watch that game and for some of Diggs' so called mistakes, it looked like he thought he had over the top help and when he didn't he had to bust his butt. He wasn't the only one that looked lost in the secondary.

If one guy is routinely getting toasted, I might buy a talent issue. But when everyone looks bad and there is clear confusion (as also pointed out by Olsen a few times), my first look isn't at Diggs or Elam (who I don't think is all that good anyway, LOL), it's at the scheme and DC.
When you have five DCs/schemes in seven years, things like this will happen.

Sam Williams is actually pretty good. He's had a lot of pressures, been close on several sacks, and even applied the pressure to Wilson's face that caused the interception by Dono to help us win the game in overtime.

on Russell Wilson's INT, Sam Williams was able to bull rush the LT back toward Wilson.

Wilson drops back, sets is feet, but immediately has to move and reset his feet because of the pressure.
Williams keeps pushing the LT back. As Wilson is cocking his arm back, Wilson gets his arms up.
The ball sails

but there was pressure in Wilson's face there.

I was out of town during the game vs the giants but I see its on YouTube now.

I am watching it and man was that defense TERRIBLE. No pass rush from the DE's.Diggs and Elam were both terrible and Wilson should have been benched (though he did make an INT to end the game at the end).

Wilson is not a coverage safety. And watching Sam Williams rush the passer is bad. Zero moves put a pull rush. Too slow of the ball to beat the OT with speed. And what's up with Kneeland constantly lining up too far off the ball. Almost like a 1/2 to a yard further back then the rest of the defensive line on a few plays I seen.

Reaction times rushing for the group, were probably much better for the Eagles game.

Kneeland must think he is playing the Flex D from the 70’s.
I see the NFL has a thing called the Wide 9 and more recently there have been teams running that I don't know which coordinators run it but I remember the Eagles are running it and they line up the same way so I don't know maybe that's what he was told to do this may all come down to scheme and the coach that's going to need to fix things because I think we have some talent there on the edge and throughout this team and they're not getting what they need from them they're in the wrong positions like Donovan Wilson is not a free safety Playing cover three has him covering guys deep down the field double teamed or not he is not that type of player he belongs in the box he's a hybrid linebacker and strong safety so there are some problems here and it might just be the coordinator can get it fixed soon he needs to learn his players the players need to learn his system and we're only two games in and maybe just maybe they'll get it on track....

The wide nine defense is a defensive formation in football where the defensive ends line up extremely wide, often outside the tight end, in a position that gives them space to gain momentum and attack the quarterback with better angles for pass-rushing. This alignment creates one-on-one pass-rushing opportunities for the defensive ends and forces the running back to cut back inside, but it can leave the defense vulnerable to the run, especially trap plays.

Good point. It did look like more confusion than just bad scheme. The staff hopefully can fix that and not many QB’s can hit those deep passes like Wilson

Who knows but even Olsen, who probably knows more football than you and I, pointed this out during the broadcast that at times, the CBs looked like they were sitting short when in fact they needed to carry their guy further down the field.

And FWIW, when it comes to Eberflus, this isn't an uncommon issue with him. When he first got to Indy, there was chatter about how there was often confusion on defense given his scheme, etc.

I thought Stephen said we were going to be able to "scheme" pressure.
That's the thing. Eberflus has never been known for scheming pressure. He likes to rush 4 and sit back and play zone. Without Micah, he is a bad fit at defensive coordinator.

It's almost like they are learning a new defense on the fly without having played a single preseason game to work things out real time.
