That would be awesome if he could play. I'd like to see our offense at full strength this Sunday.

It's amazing the difference between the offense and defense when it comes to injuries.

The offense has absolutely no injuries (correct me if I'm wrong) for starters or key backups. Aside from the interior OL injuries early in the preseason, we're back at full strength. Leary should be back and healthy. Waters is healthy, but he just might need a week to get acclimated.

Then you look at the defense... Crawford out for the year the first hour of OTAs. Johnson out for the year again. Claiborne nicked up and might play limited snaps. Ratliff out at least the first 6 games. Bass out about a month. Spencer out probably the first few games.

Does not mean he will start or even get playing time, but it is a little bit of good news. :)

I'd have him active over Arkin as our swing G.
Sure. But if you're gonna have him active, you might as well start him. If he doesn't start, they should just make Arkin the game day swing guard.

I think they were only going Costa and Parnell going into the game. Not Arkin.

My feeling is that if he is not able to play the entire game that is fine. He is better than Bern. Even half a game of better is well... better.

Interesting to see how the back up situation plays out Week 2 and beyond. I expect Bern and Costa will start competing to be the 2nd team C.

When Waters takes over and Leary stays healthy and Bern is second team, not sure why you would ever activate Costa, if Bern could be a backup for both C and G, Parnell ST.

Seems like that would give you a lot of position flexibility.

Yes I was thinking I read some blurb where it seemed to indicate that Bern would wind up being the back up OG/C but I could be wrong.

I am shocked that we would consider starting someone at OG that we signed 2 days back when we have talents like Bernie and Free to choose from

Shocked I tell you

Well, I think you might do that because Costa is a better Center than Bern.

People hate Bern, but I think he's pretty valuable. Yeah, he's overpaid, but he is everything you would want in a reserve interior OLman. He can play every interior position and not be a big liability. I hope we keep him for a few years, but only if we somehow renegotiate his contract.

I hope not. I would prefer Dallas draft a few guards who could push Bern off the roster once his contract is up.

I don't think that there is any way we can play him. I can not imagine that he has had time to learn, even half the plays. We need him healthy for the season and that probably means more conditioning. The worst possible thing that could happen is that we lose him early because he wasn't in playing condition.

Our 1st four games are very winnable. We have the following:

Giants (H)
Chefs (R)
Rams (H)
Bolts (R)

After that, it gets significantly harder.

Denver (H)
Skinz (H)
Philly (R)
Lions (R)
Vikes (H)
Saints (R)
**Bye**

We have 4 playoff teams, a much improved Detroit and Division Rival Eagles. We need Waters to be there for this much more, IMO, then the first 4 games.

Not sure the difference is that much especially in a injury one game situation and the reason coaches love position flexibility, is it allows them more game day active roster flexibility.

I guess your opponent plays into this as well, if they felt Costa could handle a particular guy better then Bern. But all things being equal I think they would activate Bern for C & G and spend the extra active player some where else.
