It's feeling pretty good.
Cowboys record is where it should be in my blind homer eyes.

But these last to games. We let teams back into game. So close to letting NO make an incredible come back. Then texans.

Gotta close these out. Who, what is our closer plan?

Again, 4-1. It's really a truckin' beautful thing! Truck yeah!!

It's becoming very annoying to see this over and over. Up 2 scores at the end of the game. Let the team score a TD. Go 3 and out on offense while using about 20 seconds and punting right back. Our play calling in those situations is very tentative. Not the same purpose as before.

You knew when Murray ran into his OLineman on 1st down, we would be punting in a few plays. Happened against the Rams as well. You have to put those away with your offense on the field.

Yeah.

Don't want to sound like I'm not happily surprised to be 4-1, but there has been a noticeable inability to put teams away.

I know it's never an easy thing to do, but these teams and especially quarterbacks, seem to be able to 'rise from the dead' in the second half and later stages of games to make them more 'interesting' then they should be.

Glad to have the win of course, but I thought that we missed plenty of opportunities to put it away long before it went to overtime.

So what's your play call in these situations? Are you putting the ball in Romo's hands? Murray's?

I think the defense was gassed as well. After RoMac went out, Foster went wild.
This defense though improved, still give up those late game yards and scores. But still better than last year. They will improve though.

Maybe playing Houston and their defense played well, it's preparation in a way for going against the Seahawks next week.

Murray.
More specifically, screen pass to Murray.
Short passes to Murray.

Keep the defenses in their toes. Make them run after Murray, not into him.

Closing the game was a problem, sure, but you can close out the came earlier by not letting a team hang around that isn't nearly as good.

Two red zone turnovers and a drop cost Dallas at least 10. Don't make those mistakes and it's a 20 point game, and we're not having this discussion.

In the NO game, they got to within 14, the D got a stop and the offense delivered the killshot to Dez. I don't they were 'that' close to coming back.

Umm ... I could live with what happened with New Orleans every week. The Saints made a little noise with 17 second-half points, but we daggered them and ultimately were outscored only 17-14 in the half after building a 24-0 lead.

Kneeling at the end of that game brought a huge sense of satisfaction that maybe Dallas had figured out how to dominate once again. The Houston game showed we're still not above playing down-to-the-wire games where we could easily lose a game we should win ... but at least we won it.

People complained last year that we passed the ball in those situations. Now we're complaining that we run the ball in those situations.

I think this place spends too much time judging our play calling based on the results of the play.

IMO.....that's a large part of 'letting them back in the game'.

Actually, much bigger lead last week. So, yes, we could still have this conversation.

The initial step to fixing this starts with the Head Coach. It starts with his view on how you close out games. He struggled MIGHTILY the past few years because he was calling plays AND managing the game. Well now he no longer has to call the plays. So as a game manager....he has to decide "how much is enough" And because he was nurtured in the 90s NFL culture....he has a slanted view on "how much is enough" But in todays NFL...you better try to score 40...and if you wind up with 30....then so be it. But if you manage the game to score 24 - 27 points...then throttle down to "save it for next week". You wind up in situations like we have been in OFTEN during Garretts tenure.

If you stock your roster with a QB, WRs, RBs, TEs....you trust....then you don't get to the end of the game with your RB being gassed. Because you have spread the wealth throughout the game. But again..this all goes back to Garrett's comfort level with having a main WR threat (like Irvin)....stud back (like Emmit)...playmaking TE (like Novacek)...and the most dominant OL in the league. The culture was different then...the rules were different then...and the Cowboy defense was much different back then.

Doing "just enough" to win creates bad habits that will betray you win you finally get in a game where you are going to need 40 points to win.

Bull. No you can't. I don't believe you. Lol

Understood. I am merely referring to using the backs not passing to wide receivers. Short, safe stuff. Chunks of yards here and there.

First of all , if this team came out with guns blazing like they did against NO, Houston would never had a chance. But one week they come out firing and the next week they go back to the slow start.

In yesterday's game a well executed screen pass would have shocked the Texans, and a bigger shocker would have been to throw a pass to Hannah or Escobar. The Texans would never have seen that coming...... and neither would we!
