We may have a formula to slow Aaron Rogers

We aren't going to stop Aaron Rogers. It's unlikely the Dallas defense will hold Green Bay under 24 or 28. However since our offense should be able to move the ball...we can win the game by forcing four or five punts and limiting the damage in the red zone.

Curiously we may have inadvertently discovered a formula to slow Rogers during the Lions game. I speak of what Marinelli did out of necessity during that Detroit game because of injuries. Dallas lacked healthy defensive linemen and we were forced to rush just three down linemen.

Our defense was wildly successful when employing this scheme and was able to generate even more pass rush than earlier in the game. We also could occasionally drop back and saturate the zone.

Rogers is simply too nimble for most defense linemen. Even when rushers get past the Packers very good pass blockers...these defenders are too often helpless to close the deal and make a sack. The packer quarterback is athletic and makes it look easy sidestepping and dodging most 270 pound defenders.

If we rush 3 big guys but blitz random linebackers or cornerbacks I suspect we can keep Aaron from extending plays like he is so apt to do. We can bring quicker attackers to close on Aaron and close him out. Yes we may be a bit more vulnerable to the run game, but the plan of attack should be the head of the snake and that snake is Rogers and those extended plays.
The formula is wearing number 21. A steady dose from the first snap, 30 carries sounds about right.

This might be a game where it makes some sense to go for it on 4th down whenever we are past the 50-yard line. If we punt, Aaron Rodgers will have them past that point in 2 plays. Our best chance is to be great in the red zone and hold them to field goals as often as possible but we must keep the chains moving at all cost and going for it on 4th down increases those odds.

I agree. If it's 4th and 2 at midfield--something like that...I'm going for it. Green Bay will likely be thinking the same thing as I doubt they'll be getting a lot of stops on us.

Marinelli and Linehan has years of experience battling GB from their days in Detroit. They are very familiar with GB. I am 100% certain we'll be more than ready for them.

The Giants had a good plan. They just couldn't sack him. Corner backs can't cover for the amount of time that he got to dance around.

This team has to contain Rogers by keeping him in the pocket, and get him to the ground.

Rogers was effective yesterday inside the pocket and out. The way he moved around inside the pocket on various plays was pretty remarkable. That pocket was like an elastic bubble. It would change shape but wouldn't collapse... and he would re-center himself inside that cacooon. We'll need to do better than G'men's pass rush.

Yeah but A. The clock ticks down on both teams equally. So if we are a control team, then Rodgers is on the sideline and doesn't get the chances to put up 35 points. B. Dak stepped up and started putting the ball down the field more the last few games. And was very good at it. C. I'm still convinced Romo is gonna be involved in the game plan some how. If and when he jogs out, I'm gonna lose my mind with happiness. Rodgers wants to gunsling.. let me introduce you to Tony Romo..best gunslinger in football.

The only way Romo gets involved is if Dak gets injured. We've gone the entire season with Dak and if we're going to get to the SB it will be with him. Despite Romo playing some last week, one series all season isn't going to have him prepared for playoff football facing Aaron Rodgers. Romo's gunslinging style will lead to turnovers and sacks putting Rodgers and the Packers offense on the field more. We have to stick with what got us to this game. In 07 we made big changes heading into the playoffs, getting away from what got us there. Barber got his first start and we put in Terry Glenn who hadn't played all season and decided on a ball control offense featuring the running game. It helped keep the game close which played into the Giants hands and got us beat.

In Rod we trust. :)

He's been a great field general with that defense this season. Biggest test of the year is Sunday. And if we get past Pack we face #1 ranked the Atlanta offense, #1 in NFL...and then the Pats.

Whew...3 most esteemed quarterbacks in the league await. Star can shine brighter than ever if we get it done. Let's do this!

It has to be a makable 4th and one and we have to be at least around our 40 to start taking those kind of chances. You go for it at your own 45 and miss, one pass from Rodgers could have them down to our 35 and in FG range. We're going to have to play some solid defense, there's simply no way around it if we're going to win this game. We're going to have to get a consistent pass rush that hems Rodgers in or he will take us apart. He'll put up at the very least 2 TD's on Sunday even if our D plays good so we're going to have to put some points/TD's on the board.

We can't be settling for FG's because we saw yesterday once Rodgers catches fire the TD's start coming like an avalanche of boulders . Some of those flick throws he made yesterday can't be defended...impossible! If the Aaron Rodgers we saw yesterday that took that Giants defense apart shows up on Sunday I can't see us winning that game. Our 26th pass defense is simply no match for a QB of that caliber who's flicking footballs like darts for TD's. The Packers will put up 35+ if that's the Aaron Rodgers we see on Sunday unless we can control the ball most of the game.

People fail to realize we have a very quick defense some of those quick plays against Ny will not work against us.

Is this your new story now that your "2007" Gints are done? You don't think GB was trying to stop Zeke when we played them earlier? Go watch the game again.

They tried but couldn't and Dak killed them without Dez. Having Dez will only help the other WRs get single coverage. Now they can't double Witt and Bease easily.

I never said the Giants were the 2007 version and didn't pick them to win yesterday, I gave the Packers the edge due to the way they were playing and a hot Aaron Rodgers. When we played the Packers 3 months ago we were riding a 4 game winning streak and were playing some of our best football all season. We're 2-2 the last 4 games while they're riding a 7 game winning streak and have the hottest QB in the league who's thrown 12 TD's in his last 3 games. He tossed 40 TD's during the regular season when he spent part of the season in a slump which we caught him in during week 5. Because Zeke put up 157 yards on the Packers earlier in the season, you're going to mark him down for another 157 on Sunday? Not saying he's not capable but this is a much better Packers team than we played in week 5. We may have to throw the ball to beat them if we can't stop Rodgers from flicking TD's on our 26th ranked pass defense. We have to hope Nelson can't play and the Packers come in beat up. Dak was playing his best football in week 5 but his yards have come down since because teams have had plenty of time to game plan him.

He's only had one game in his last 7 games where he's passed for more yards than he did vs Green Bay and his 3 TD's against the Packers was a career high. He may have to put up 4 TD's on them for us to hang in if we can't stop Rodgers who was off his game when we played them in Oct. As for Dez some of our better games were without him, beating the Packers and Cinn in convincing fashion. When he's being contained he gets frustrated and it could lead to forced throws to try and get him involved. We'll just have to see if he shows up on Sunday because he certainly didn't show up in the playoffs in 2014. All we talked about with him was a catch he didn't make under the rule. He's going to have an opportunity to make up for that play and get some payback, we'll see if he steps up and takes advantage of it or he spends all day jawing with defenders having them get inside his head.

Dak and Dez have a better chemistry as of late. Dak going deep often to him. Think the deep ball is something Dak is getting more comfortable with.

The chemistry between them has gotten better, they've been on the same page more often but it's important that Dez shows up on Sunday. He has an opportunity to get some payback for what happened against the Packers in 2014. We'll see if he steps up and takes advantage.

Walk me through it bro. How does one team get two possessions in a row?
A team can gain consecutive possessions through an onside kick or a muffed punt/kickoff (the receiving team in that case never has possession). Those are the only cases I can come up with.

Here is how we stop Aaron Rogers: Rush 3 or 4 D-Lineman, but DO NOT RUSH UPFIELD! They need to stay at most, one yard past the LOS, because Rogers can and will run the ball. Also, they need to have a LB, I'd prefer Lee, to stay in and spy on Rogers just in case he decides to get squirrly. The way you defeat an athletic QB is to make him beat you with his arm. Now, the main caveat to this is that Roger CAN beat us with his arm. So it boils down to this, the D-Line HAVE TO GET SACKS this week, by themselves with no blitzes. If they can do that then we will beat GB. If Rogers has all day to throw with no pressure, and when there is pressure he takes off out of the pocket to 4-7 yards, then it will be a LONG day.

The formula is one that Al Davis of the old Oakland Raiders used to use. "The opposing team's quarterback must go down and he must go down hard". That is the formula. We must lay some hits on Rodgers early and often even if it is a roughing the passer call. That is the one thing that makes his mechanics go out the window. he is a prima donna QB.

Yeah, but GB knows that and will stack the box 8-9 strong. Dak will have to throw to beat them IMO. He can and will do it. 30-24 Dallas.

That's true. But Dallas needs to run to have the ball most of the game. Dallas can't get in a shootout and win.

We're not a big play offense and the Packers are because Rodgers can strike from anywhere on the field. He's a TD throwing machine and Dak isn't there yet. Great rookie year but we have a chain moving offense that heavily features Beasley and Witten. I could see us winning a 27-20 game but if it takes over 30 to beat the Packers that reduces our odds because it will put too much on Dak's plate in my opinion.

The only way our defense is going to temper their offense with the Rodgers we saw today is to limit their offensive opportunities with ball control. Wear them down, get them behind and hope we can contain Rodgers. Once he gets into a groove he can shred you like what he did to the Giants today. He put up 362 yards and 4 TD's on the Giants defense in single digit temps. Hard not to be a little discouraged watching his performance today.
Marinelli's top focus is to limit big plays. I think that is a good strategy against GB because GB has to overcome a limited running game to sustain drives.

The Giants hit him quite a bit.

Lee, Irving and Jones need to have big games. If they do I think we can hold this offense down enough.
