Guys, before you jump all over me, you all realize how we need veteran leadership on defensive line for pass rush. Should we look at alonzo spellman for veteran pass rush?

They are doing a deal on him on espn, he is now doing marital arts/wrestling deal. He knows about getting down in stance, maybe help guys like Chris Canty & Marcus Spears. It seems like he has controled his mental issues. So, I was just wondering maybe he can help our guys like canty and spears, along with giving us a pass rush. He is 35.

Alonzo Spellman is a sad story really. You have a guy with unbelievable potential, but he has a mental health problem. However, he could have controlled it with medication, but he chose to self medicate with alcohol and other substances (so the ESPN story goes).

I wish this guy the best. I hate to see former players with legitimate conditions such as this one.

As to the intent of the post, he had one sack in his last year in the arena league and it appears that he is doing some type of cage fighting. This doesn't sound like someone we should take a flier on.

I agree with that, I admit, he does have a bi polar problem, but he is self medicating now, seems like he has learned his lesson. I was just thinking, I remember when he played for us, he was dominant at pass rushing, and destroying running backs. Maybe, just maybe he has gotten his life straightened out, and he can help us.

I look at it this way, if he has straightened out his life, and can help provide pass rushing techniques for our young inexperienced defensive linemen, what could it hurt. You could bring him in for a look see, and see if he has anything left. Maybe with his new marital arts technique, etc, can help our other guys.

And their are only 3 games left in the season, And if we make the playoffs, that would be only 2-3 games if we go far. And then Super Bowl.

Like other guys we have, you all realize we have no pass rush besides Ware, with ellis out now. Even Junior Glymph whom we resigned and that other def lineman Bowman i think, they arent even playing but taking up a roster spot. Just what if, he has something left, can get a sack a game, and big hit on a running back now and then,........

I would love to see a therapy session between Terrell Owens and Alonzo Spellman.

In all seriousness, I think Spellman just can't be trusted mentally, although he always seems to be in impeccable physical condition. He controlled his issues just fine with us his first season, even rooming with and helping to counsel Dimitrius Underwood, who you'll remember also had his share of problems, including a suicide attempt with a steak knife during a bye week while he was with the Dolphins.

His 2nd year with us he started to deteriorate somewhat, and then he had that relapse on a plane a couple of years ago where he started running up and down the aisle saying they were all going to die in a crash.

Without considering anything else he fails the first rule of signing free agents.

Is the player over the age of 30? Yes he is. So, not no, but HELL NO.

Yeah, Alonzo.
He can still be found in rush-hour traffic, yelling at people.

I don't know that AFL sack totals (good or bad) really reflect anything.

With that said, there's no way he should or will be considered -- by the Cowboys, or anyone else in this league. His NFL days are simply done.

I do agree, though, that he's a sad story. It's sad to see the things he's done over the years.

To be honest with you we need somebody, I'll take Demitrius Underwood right about now. Our Pass rush sucks. I did like Alonzo Spellman at one time. This defensive line does need some help. People could say what they want but this defensive line is terrible. I believe we should've used that 18th pick to trade up to the chargers to get Merriman. Cause Spears sucks. We've been getting robbed lately in the first round.

I was thinking about Shante Carver myself. I think I can find him pulling bongs at ASU park. I will go look. Report back later.

LOL. I thought I'd read where Shante had cleaned up his life, had adopted a couple of his nephews and/or nieces, and was doing decently in the Arena League. Also, wasn't alcohol the main source of his problems, not drugs?

By the way, we could seek out Kavika Pittman, last I heard he was with the Panthers as recently as '04 I believe.
