There's no guarantee Church will be here next season.
There's only been one safety that played well into his mid-30s, and that was Ed Reed (Rod Woodson if you count him in his late-career switch). Lets not place Eric Weddle on the Ed Reed pedestal just yet. He hasn't even had half the career of Ed Reed.
So, if a player isn't Ed Reed then they won't be an upgrade? You're a smart guy, you know that's a little ridiculous.
And yeah, maybe "mid-30's" was a bit of an exaggeration, but Weddle turned 31 in January. In all likelihood this is a 2-3 year deal.
There are more than a few examples of safeties playing well for a long time. Charles Woodson was the secondary piece that held that Packers defense together during their SB run and at 39 still played better than Church and Wilcox.. Roman Harper just helped a top 3 defense reach the Super Bowl. Reggie Nelson just had more picks than our entire defense combined. Even Antrel Rolle was having a good over 30 run until he got injured this year.
Those are just guys off the top of my head. I'm not in love with Weddle but if he's even in talks about making another All-Pro team, which he did just the season before last, I don't think anyone's going to say this was some crazy deal when he's not turning 32 until next year.
The only thing that annoys me is this is another example of a "well run organization" that isn't supposed to spend money in FA. No, they don't sign 40mill in FA, but they went and got their guy, like the Patriots and Broncos last year, like every well run organization tends to do.
