For the most part I agree but I also tend to think players are capable of improving. This is the 1st time in his career he has played under the same Coordinator 2 years in a row. I think it is hard when you are uncomfortable with the speed of the game and on top of that unsure of what you are doing. Hard to lead when put in that situation. I honestly believe Weeden has the tools to be a good QB and I think if he can come out and do well and help the team win this upcoming game he will also gain confidence in himself. I watched a lot of Weeden at OSU I think if the players around Weeden step up and we can get a good running game going Weeden just may prove a lot of people wrong about him

Weeden has the "tools" to be a good QB which is why he was a #1 pick but the "tool's that get QB's drafted high have to equate into solid performances and wins in the NFL. I also watched him at OSU and he hasn't looked like the same QB as an NFL starter because more is put on the shoulders of NFL QB's. I know he played in Cleveland but he faired worse than the other QB's they used during his stint with the Browns. The biggest concern with Weeden is he can't manufacture plays like Romo so if the protection breaks down he has a tendency to force balls into coverage. Not having Dez and a talented back to turn to makes the prospects for success with Weeden at QB less likely. I can't see a lot of good coming with him at QB if he's going to be asked to throw the ball 40-plus a game. Romo had 45 attempts on opening day which was more than he attempted in any game last season. He was in the process of attempting his 28th pass on Sunday with 10 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter when he was injured.

He was on pace for another 40 attempts and it's going to be hard winning with Weeden if it's going to take the passing game to move the football. The Cowboys had trouble pounding the ball in from the one on Sunday so the running game has to start clicking. The Cowboys need to activate Michael and see what he can do. Again, I'm not predicting doom and gloom with Weeden but I would be lying if I said I felt encouraged with him at QB. It's hard to get the image of how bad he looked vs AZ out of my head but he's being given another opportunity and we just have to hope he can play well enough to give the team a chance to stay in the race. If we're not having to depend on him too much in the passing we'll have a chance with him but if he's having to air it out every week this could get ugly not saying it will but it could.

He failed in Cleveland as others have, who was the worst of the worst? the numbers were not vastly different, it was a crappy situation period.

I think anytime a QB has a chance to work with the same OC and the same system for a little bit of time as Weeden has it allows him to play faster and with fewer doubts. I'm not trying to claim him as some all world QB I do however feel he is more capable than many are claiming.

A guy I work with made a good point about Weeden. This is the first time in his career he's had the same OC two seasons in a row. Just drive the bus, B.

I hope he can

I did watch that video.

He made a lot of mistakes but there were 4-5 times the receiver didn't do him any favors.

It always amuses me the mental gymnastics people will go through to try and preserve being correct.

Weeden played well causes all manner of cognitive dissonance and people flail to make ends meet. Of course being wrong about Weeden being the worst QB ever never comes into the calculation.

I will gladly eat every bad word I have said about Weeden if he gets us 4 wins in 8 weeks.

I thought he was a great signing when he was basically free. Now that he is needed we will see if we choose money over talent.

Of course he looks better when the team didn't prepare to play him all week...

That's part of why he's looked good in relief. Sometimes when backups don't have any time to think about playing and are able to enter a game in a moments notice they can play very well. We all remember Clint Longley's great relief performance replacing an injured Roger Staubach on Thanksgiving in 74. There's plenty examples of backups entering games in relief and lighting it up but when they have all week to prepare to start some get antsy and can't handle the pressure of starting. They have all week to think about it and the pressure gets to them. That obviously didn't happen to Jason Garrett when he started on Thanksgiving replacing an injured Troy Aikman. Alvin Harper came up big that day and the Cowboys modern day Alvin Harper TWill needs to keep coming up big.

Since 2000, they've had 14 different quarterbacks throw at least 100 passes. Weeden ranked just below the middle in passer rating and winning percentage --

PASSER RATING
Kelly Holcomb 83.3
Brian Hoyer 77.6
Trent Dilfer 76.9
Jason Campbell 76.9
Jeff Garcia 76.7
Seneca Wallace 76.6
Tim Couch 75.7
Colt McCoy 74.8
Brandon Weeden 71.8
Charlie Frye 71.1
Derek Anderson 69.7
Brady Quinn 66.8
Jake Delhomme 63.4
Doug Pederson 56.6

WINNING PERCENTAGE
Brian Hoyer 0.588 (10-7)
Derek Anderson 0.436 (17-22)
Tim Couch 0.426 (20-27)
Jake Delhomme 0.400 (2-3)
Trent Dilfer 0.364 (4-7)
Colt McCoy 0.333 (8-16)
Charlie Frye 0.318 (7-15)
Brandon Weeden 0.304 (7-16)
Kelly Holcomb 0.300 (6-14)
Jeff Garcia 0.273 (3-8)
Brady Quinn 0.267 (4-11)
Jason Campbell 0.111 (1-8)
Doug Pederson 0.091 (1-10)
Seneca Wallace 0.071 (1-13)

And yes, that is an ugly list of names.

Can you imagine being a Browns fan? That would just suck.

Every QB since Bernie Kosar has failed in Cleveland and although the numbers weren't vastly different Weeden's numbers were the worst of any of the Browns QB's during his tenure. His final season in Cleveland his completion percentage of 52.8 was well below that of Jason Campbell and Bran Hoyer. His passer rating was well below both and he was regressing which is why he was dumped after only 2 seasons. Let's face it he's a huge drop off from Romo and even with Romo the Cowboys had to really battle to come out with wins the first 2 weeks. We should have a pretty good idea after Sundays game with Atlanta if we have a chance to stay afloat with Weeden. If he goes out and stinks it up there's going to be plenty of panic on the board.

I would hope so, Hoyer had been in the NFL 5 years before he got to Cleveland and Jason Campbell had been in the league 6 years. Fact is Cleveland has done poorly with their entire team, they get QB they do not stay in the same system and then get rid of them Hoyer is now in Houston. I'm not trying to let Weeden off the hook, but that was a messed up situation for a QB in Cleveland. People choose to judge him off that situation fine, that is their view. For me all I care about is what he does in Dallas. He has now been working in his 2nd season same staff, same system and has some good players around him and a defense who looks to be very good as well. I think Weeden should have a better understanding of this offense and I think with that it will allow him to play a bit more quicker as he has a better understanding of the offense. I don't expect Brandon to Carry this team I do expect him to go out and help this team win games

If you seriously think Weeden is going to look so impressive in Romo's absence that we've seen the last of Romo as the starter you better find a good marinade for all that crow you'll be choking down.

If he truly believes that, forget the marinade. He needs to find a good rehab facility.

The ones who thought Weeden would beat Romo out after the Cowboys signed him need to join him. There were some who thought adding Weeden would create a QB controversy. It's hard to tell when people here are serious or are just trying to get a laugh.

Jason Campbell had already flamed out with 3 teams by the time he arrived in Cleveland I doubt the Browns thought he would be statistically better than a QB they used a #1 on the previous year. If Weeden was what the Bowns thought he was he should have easily outperformed Campbell and Hoyer by his second year despite their experience. Weeden's completion percentage and passer rating were higher as a rookie than during his second season he was regressing. He may play well for the Cowboys we'll just have to see but if he doesn't many here will be calling for his head and it won't take long.

Yes but they were not inexperience they had been in the league playing in the NFL. Browns did like Weeden they then start changing OC then another OC and another system for a inexperienced QB coming out of college, they did him no favor and it is a big reason other QB fail just as well in Cleveland. You don't throw a QB out there and do what Cleveland did and expect much. What I do know is he has been in Dallas now going into his 2nd year working with Linehan and I very much believe Linehan will get a lot out of Weeden.

They had experience but by Weeden's second season he should have been outperforming both if he was the QB the Browns thought they were drafting. None of the QB's he was competing with in Cleveland had a completion percentage higher than 59.6 percent or a passer rating higher than 82.6. You would think a #1 pick could outperform those numbers by their second season. The way to get the most out of Weeden is by having him manage games with a solid running attack. The less he has to do the better our chances are with him. With his dismal career completion percentage you don't want to put him in a position where he's having to pass the ball a lot to generate some offense or it could lead to turnovers and a lot of quick series of downs.

If that happens it's going to put more pressure on the defense that could be spending a lot of time on the field. Weeden has more career turnovers then TD passes. The Cowboys MUST get the running game going or it could end up being a long 7 weeks resulting in a long season. I think Weeden will be fine if he can pick his shots and lean on the running game but I can't see us having much success with him if it's going to take the passing game to move the ball and score. Defenses will stack the box with no Dez to stuff the running game and force Weeden to have to beat them.

I saw the same thing. He look salvageable but we need him to check down and throw the ball away rather than for balls into coverage.

2nd season in a different offense. Sorry but a 5th and 6th year vet are going to be more prepared as opposed to an inexperienced rookie. Heck Troy Aikman 1st 2 years in were rough having Shula then Turner and took year 4 before he really got going. I think Weeden would have had a better chance had Cleveland showed any stability within their team but they haven't and you going to be hard pressed to learn much when it becomes a revolving offensive system. I expect Dallas to continue to run the balanced attack as best they can, yes teams will stack the box and give us 1 on 1 on the outside and when they do I expect Dallas to go after that that is how we back them off the line. I don't want to see Weeden throwing it 40 or 45 times but frankly I don't want to see Romo throw it that often either.

I agree, I don't think it is about how many big plays you hit it is avoiding the big mistakes. He needs to stay patient and not go out trying to make big things happen. Let the players around you do their jobs and take what the defense is giving.

Well obviously the Browns weren't blaming that on his regression or they wouldn't have dumped him. There had to be more to it than changing offenses to give up on him after only 2 seasons. Aikman's first year was rough because he was playing for what many consider one of the top 10 worst teams ever and his second season was rough because the team still wasn't very good. Even during those seasons you could see the potential Aikman had which is why the Cowboys traded Steve Walsh and not him. Weeden showed no growth or potential in Cleveland which is why he was cut loose. No point in arguing it any further let's wait until Sunday and see how he performs then we'll have a better idea where the teams future the next 7 or so games stands with him.
